Don,

Depending on what it is, you may be able to just ignore it. That light is programmed to come on if any one of a hundred things isn't right.

Have you tried to read the trouble codes?

I know at one time places like Midas would check the "check engine light" for free. Make sure your gas cap is fitting snug too.

My Toyota had 3 or 4 lights come on. The owner's manual indicated that these three lights were lots of trouble. My mechanic flipped over the rubber gasket on the gas cap and I have been trouble light free for about a year.

Most (80-90%) of the time that is due to a defective gas cap. It will probably take a while after you replace the cap for the light to go out, maybe 1-2 weeks depending on your driving habits.

Most of the major US auto parts stores (Advance, Auto Zone, O'Reilly, etc.) will read the code for you using an OBD II reader and tell you what the indicated problem is at no charge. The repair labor and any necessary replacement parts will unfortunately be your expense. It may be something simple and cheap.

If the engine warning light is on after a while when you have started the engine, that indicates that a transducers or sensors in the engine having a failure and miscommunicated with the control engine to ensure the system works well. I suggest that you can use a engine scanner or multi scan to check what are the error code and which sensor are malfunctioning. Some cases do involved where the symptoms are shown from the condition of the engine itself whether its runs smoothly or jerking and even hunting and stalls.

go to autozone. they will read it for free. they won't cut the light out, but they will tell u what code made it come on then it's up to you.

Lyn-Door Industries sells Band-aids special adhesive strips that are specially designed to filter out some of the light waves emitted by these check engine lights. Good luck.
