Vibration and Noise Control in Cavitrol Trim Globe Control Valve

08/03/2011 7:24 AM

Dear Friends,

We have a globe control valve with cavitrol trim. We are using brine solution as a media.

While using these valve heavy noise and vibration is coming.

Can anyone help me to resolve this problem.

Valve Size:3"

Class:300

Oi! Can you keep the blinkin' noise down, Mate? Some of us are trying to sleep <splutter>!

Nice to know you're still keeping us on the straight & narrow.

Any of your mates know anything about that ton of coke? Some of my mates are a bit upset.

In my experience, there is no such thing as a "one size fits all" approach to cavitation trim. If you just grab a generic "anti-cavitation trim", then it is more or less a gamble if it will work.

I would suggest you contact a manufacturer that will look at your situation and build you one to suit. I don't know if they operate outside the US, but Singer is my choice for situations where cavitation is an issue.

Control valve noise and vibration can be phD topics, which can't really be covered in a short response forum.

My copy of Liptaks' Instrument Engineers Handbook, Process Control is only 3rd edition (1999), so isn't the latest (probably at least 2 editions since), but it has an excellent overview treatment in its 13 pages on valve noise.

Might I suggest you find a library that has a copy and check it out (the web preview omits many of the current edition's pages).

Pressure drop through the valve and back pressure on the discharge side (low pressure side) of the valve are two factors affecting cavitation. Another might be your brine concentration, whether or not solids are precipitating out of the liquid due to the pressure drop. Also, fluid temperature can have an effect. If you can increase the back pressure with an orifice or anti-cavitation screen on the outlet of your valve, you might solve your problem without having to go to a much more expensive drag valve.

THANK YOU SIR,

BUT CAN YOU EXPLAIN OR GIVE OVERVIEW ABOUT ORIFICE OR ANIT-CAVITATION SCREEN,

THIS WILL VERY USEFULL FOR ME

Cavitrol is a trademark of Fisher/Emerson. This cage type trim is design to work with clean fluids. Since brine solution is your fluid media there is a stong possibility of plugging and scratching the cage wall.

Brine application should require use of Notch-Flo from Fisher or LincolnLog from Masoneilan.

For a complete solution of your cavitation problem you should send valve´s Spec Sheet to the manufacturers and ask for advise.

Do remember that cavitation is the worst case application for control valves. Noise is a side effect but in the long term you might experience complete valve failure and trim destruction.
