Infrared thermometer experiments

04/18/2007 2:08 PM

Does anyone have some experiments using IR thermometers that would be good for 13 yr old middle school students?

Sure, they are hand held, point like a laser, and have a readout like a radar gun. They are fun to use and will read a temp from several feet away. I used to use one to read an oil temp right through the sight glass...

Look them up, they all work great!

Get hold of some blocks of metal steel, copper, aluminium, and brass. Then heat them and measure the temps. Let them cool a minuet and read again, repeat until cool.

Have a hot body and a sheet of glass. put the hot body on a bench and read its temp then place the glass in front note the change in temp.

Compare wood to metal and glass.

Get them to scan each other to show blood flow as traced by the temp changes.

Go out and visit you local super market and scan their fridges.

Walk around the building and show where heat energy is being lost discuss how to save on heating.

There should be some ideas you can work up into your own ideas.

you can select one hve 0.2--0.5 degree for body temperature measuring. either spot type one or thermographic type which can watch multi-dots.

I like useing mine to test various spots on a running motor. You will get different temperature readings at the bearings in the center and at the comutator if its a DC motor. I also use it to test for loaded breakers in a panel. Oh and I also use mine for checking the discharge temperature of my air ducts.

One thing to consider when using one is that when you get to close to an object or are measuring something at its edge the readings can be more difficult to obtain as the laser does not shoot out of the center of the temperature measuring area. you may have to offset the laser from the target to get what you are after. I have had a bit of difficulty in tight spaces with this problem.

Do not use laser types in school health and safety will shoot you down.

Be sure to remember, dont use industrial type for your body thermogauge. that will be large error. generally, industrial level will be at 2 degree tolorant.

I just had another thought. You could on a sunny day go out and measure the ground temps of Grass, open soil, tarmac, concrete. then repeat this on a cloudy day. Then discuss what you find. You can do this in full sun and shade.
