VFD as a Phase Converter

08/03/2011 3:45 PM

Can a VFD be supplied by 240VAC single phase power to operate a 1 HP 240VAC three phase inverter duty motor?

Yes.

(If only to convey at least a little info.)

Can, yes. Will, not all. Some mfrs use Phase Loss protection that cannot be defeated in programming, rendering them useless in this application. You have to check.

Electronic way it is getting expensive in a great hurry. The problem is that any single phase has 0Volt transitions, where voltage collapses on whatever it drives. If you try to size capacitors to bridge that for VFD, they become huge and expensive for low frequencies at significant power. UPS with batteries? Same.

But sometimes old technology is the best: rotary 1 phase to 3 phase converter. Applied KISS principle, reliable, inexpensive. My ENCO catalogue: www.use-enco.com for example has it for $429 for 1 HP, $645 for 5HP in a great lineup. Having reliable 3 phase you are home free for VFD or any such thing requiring steady power! Talk to them: 800-USE-ENCO. Let them size it.
