Manufacture 2-Core MV Cable

08/03/2011 7:39 PM

It is so hard to find any 2-core MV cable, such as 11kV or above.

For two phase MV system, people choose single cores only. I can think of two reasons here: first, 2-core MV cable is so rare so it could cost more. Second, it uses much more fillers to be circular, this can be the limitation for some manufacturers.

I just wonder, is there any other reason to not manufacture 2-core cables? Any electrical reason for it?

You could use 3-core cable, and just leave one core unconnected, or maybe used as ground.

I think this could cause problems with the stress relief arrangements at the termination.

As to why 2 core isn't generally available, it's a case of demand. If you approach a cable manufacturer I'm sure they would oblige for a price!

The epuipment necessary for dual core systems is not run of the mill. The requirements which are necessary for dual core two phase systems results in equipment not being manufactured on any appreciable scale.

The EMF resulting from a two-phase system would require additional clearance issues from single or three phase systems.
