ESD Earthing

04/18/2007 2:16 PM

Hi,

The Industries that includes Electronic equipments (Mobilephone manufacturing etc.,), the particular area is Earthed using earthmat of suitable size. this type of earthing is called ESD earthing ie., Earthing for Electrostatic Dissipitation.

Can anyone explain how the size of the earthmat is calculated?

Quite simply, the earth mat is sized for the intended work area where people will be handling static sensitive devices (such as around a work bench). There is no point in having a static mat on the floor 3 metres away from the static sensitive devices. Static mats may be required for walk ways if unprotected devices are being moved back and forth (when not sealed in static sensitive packaging).

You need a whole ESD set up with worktop protection, wrist straps, heel straps, as well as the flooring. It is very expensive so only use what you actually need. I worked in electronics manufacturing when all this became a part of the work area requirement and it cost the company many thousands of pounds to put in all the required work area facilities.

You may have to create the specs sheets first for entire setup including floor, table, strap, earthing system, Mobile systems etc

Google for EIA-625A , Its JEDEC standard ( Requirement for Handling Electro static -Discharge sensitive Deivices.

ESD is created when two objects are rubbed each other. The movement of static electrons create a voltage leading to the discharge of the current onto the device when touches.Hence the created voltage is dissipated to the earth before it is being passed on to the device.

All the walking area need to earthed also the machines and human body.

As a rule-of-thumb 1MΩ is equivalent to a short-circuit for static electricity.

In many industries (pharmaceutical bulk manufacture, for example), rigorous equipotential bonding of metal structures, an antistatic floor and the wearing of antistatic-soled footwear is all that is required.

Do you remember the flour mill that blew it self to pieces because an earthing strap got left off after some maintenance was carried out. Must have been about ten twelve years ago now. I think it was in Lincolnshire.

51:45:11N, 0:34:37E is some distance from Lincolnshire. The 'bang' didn't get here.

Static earthing on plants is a huge can of worms that might benefit a discussion on its own. It's a different arena from ESD protection for static-sensitive electronic devices. Previous comments on antistatic floor, equipotential bonding of metalwork and antistatic footware are still applicable.

The earthmat size depends on the resistivity required by the client & also on the type of flooring.

It depends on moisture content on the floor, area Sq.mm.
