What's The Best Permanent Magnet Generator?

04/18/2007 2:37 PM

I have been reading as much as possible about permanent magnet generators and wonder what everyone else thinks?

I am leaning toward making a plate of coils and a plate of magnets and spinning the magnet disk above the coils. I think in a 3 phase set up (still learning about this...)

Whats the best coil and magnet configuration? Any one heard of pancake coils?

Any way...just over here at the lab playing with some wires and looking to make the most efficient PM Generator possible...

Perhaps you are too?

Mike

This is a very mature technology, having been under development for well over 100 years. Stronger magnets allow for smaller devices and higher power levels, at greater costs.

Suggest you google thus:-

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=neodymium+%2B%22permanent+magnet%22+%2Bmotor&btnG=Google+Search

and add or subtract terms with a + or - to find specifics

They say we can see far because we stand on the shouders of giants.

Research is all about standing on the back of what has been done before

"Any one heard of pancake coils?"

A cheap, if not free, source of pancake motors can be found in old floppy disk drives. Tinker with these and see what you can come up with!

I dunno, can they function as generators? Not all motors will function as generators and I haven't tried taking apart my floppy drive. 'Don't use it anymore so I guess I can take it out. No wait, my backup and virus software need them. I won't be able to test it. Can anyone test it? or has anyone tested it?

I have seen projects using discarded motors of this type. The person posing the question is trying to re-invent the dynamo. Why alternators are so much better.

Yes, alternators and generators are a mature technology, but think of the fun and educational value of trying to improve on existing designs.

In the realm of computer software, when I was UNIX newbie, I didn't realize it came with a little program that computes a given number's prime factors. I needed a program to do this and, in my naiveté, I wrote my own. I found out later that my little program was at least twice as fast as the one that came with our UNIX system! I didn't create anything new or earthshaking, as such, but it sure was educational. I wouldn't know how it was done if I hadn't tried doing it myself.

So, in short, I applaud what Jester is doing, even if only for his own edification.

Probably not, but they contain "pancake coils" which Jester had inquired about.

I don't know if this is directly on topic but, my wife used to be a fairly reliable pancake generator until she started working Saturdays and doesn't usually want to cook on Sunday mornings.

Did you get the extended warranty? Maybe she needs to be serviced. hehehe

Yes, very likely. The pancake generator makes frequent requests for service but, generally during periods that are out of phase with the service schedule. Also, there is the issue with 50% increase in mass and resulting service complications. Thankfully, the free market always provides attractive solutions.

And there is alway the opportunity for third party vendors to insert themselves into the production sequence...

This is a design that I have been thinking of building.

I am working with what I have so this is partly why it is designed this way.

The Magnets are rare earth permanent and disk shaped... .750 diameter and .125 thick. The coils are to be arranged in a 3 phase method. Wired together by colour type. I am far from an electrical engineer but think that this should work.

I think I will go with the coils as the stator and the magnet disk will be attached to the other half of my prototype of a wind turbine. I think one disk should work...I may add another disk of magnets on the oppisite sides to help strengthen the magnetic feild... I have a long way to go to come up with a final design but it sure is fun...

On another note I have been reading about an arrangement of magnets called a "Halbach" assembly. This is very interesting and I am now scratching my head as to how this might apply to my design.

Forward Motion... :)

It may well do keep us posted.

I like the concept. I want to know if a bicycle will be strong enough to create sufficient RPMs? And how many watts are possible?
