Laptop Computer Battery Configuration

08/04/2011 2:06 AM

Hi: Has anyone out there taken apart a battery module of a newer laptop. What do the cells look like inside? Mine is not holding a charge, I am thinking about taking it apart (somehow) and seeing if I can replace the cells at a cheaper price than buying an overpriced new battery pack.

Thanks for any information.

Kevin

Check DIY sites, such as instructables.com, and hackaday.com.

Each brand has its model of cell that composes the battery. You will have to search google and youtube.

First you must open your battery with non destructive methods. Determine the defective cell. This is usually determined by testing the cell to cell voltage with a small load. Ebay and battery sites will sell the correct replacement cells. Get ones with solder tabs

Then you must remove the bad cell (taking note of any sensors), and solder in the correct one. Then test it and hope you did good.

I can't believe that you guys are encouraging him to rip open lithium batteries and perform replacements which could be extremely dangerous....

I thought we had been through this before.... IF in doubt seek professional help, i.e. the service centre for the laptop.

Cutting open battery compartments of a lithium battery and replacing cells as well as someone saying bypassing the charging / safety circuits is ludicrously dangerous for the unexperienced, such as our poster (possibly).

Please OP just buy the replacement battery for your laptop and sleep soundly....

John.

Regards

Sorry that:

1. There is no professional shop known to me in UK, Canada and USA [NY, Detorit] who

undertake such jobs. No ad anywhere I could see as well.

2. Removing the control Cct to charge once the dead battery after checking and replacing the dead cells is necessary otherwise the risk of damage to the Control Cct is there.

I personally have revived a lot of Laptop batteries and other techs also.

Only Technical skill is the main requirement.

For your kind information no professional shop takes such menial jobs like it and repairs of Laptop [and Mobilephone, trimmers adapters and ...]

This is a free-lancers' job.

They know that almost all adapters are universal except their Out-put connecting plug.

All Laptop adapters are 19V≈, Mobiles' and trimmers 5V.

Just change with proper connector and you save $$$ /££ /€€ ...

And I found a manufacturer providing a single output connector and a set of converters for other styles.

OEMs are looting by such strategy of special connectors etc. etc.

Haaiee, Indeed, with tech shop hourly rates from service being $75 per hour, 2 hours labor buys a new battery = it does not pay.

The main fixers of batteries are used laptop shops who have volumes of aging batteries on hand and can optimize the skill of opening the batteries, sourcing replacement cells and testing and replacing bad cells by volume production in spare time to facilitate the sale of their own used laptops.

John, I do share your concerns about safety, but do you agree to the policy to sell a finished product about 20 times over the cost of it's raw materials? Of course you will agree it's stealing. And making it safely reparable actually requires technology 'downgrading' in the sense that a part of the technology of the current finished product batteries is not on safety, it's for MAKING them safely unrepairable. The first is plain stealing, the second is attempted murder. S.M.

The mainstream is on 18650 Li-ion cells in various connection combinations. You may also have to overcome the problem on some battery protection circuits that can't be easily disarmed if one of the batteries voltage goes too low and you may have to bypass the whole thing. (I STRONGLY discourage that, it may turn your bats into a small bomb overtime) Capacity matching is also very important. S.M.

I'm not positive and too tired to Google it, but I think that some of the newer battery packs have a tiny 'brain' that talks to the laptop. Not sure that replacing the actual cells would work, but I sure can sympathize with not wanting to buy a new pack!!

All laptop batteries has a sophisticated software card wired to monitor and control for charging.

Has different sensors connected at different voltage points.

And if the card has a fault charging is not enabled.

If you have good hand in Electronics repairs you can do some job to diagonose

fault.

Cells and Electronics encased in Press-fit plastic cover and cells fixed by adhasive.

There is one resettable fuse.

If you like to charge cells [battery] disconnect all sensors connections and also end connections i.e. cells totally isolated electrically from the card.

It is up to your skill.

Hope and pray for a good day!

Though it seems to be off-Topic but related to Laptop batteries.

Look into the software and Controls installed inside battery :

Please read an article on Battery Codes & Software:

I have opened both Windows and Macintosh laptop battery packs with the intention of repairing them cheaply. If the pack contains 18650 cells, as mentioned by SimpleMind, it is not a difficult repair, as long as you keep a record (e.g. with digital camera), of the internal connections. The important point is that each battery pack contains a small circuit board for the charger, and since we are talking Li-ion cells, you bypass this at your peril.

I don't recommend trying to repair Macintosh batteries. The cells are cuboidal, and not of a size matched by any source of model aircraft batteries. The eBay replacements are cost-effective.

As for opening the cases, I use either a fretsaw or a junior hacksaw, cutting just below one of the large faces and being careful not to cut too deep.

Please read this...

then search for a new laptop battery on eBay.
