The Ultimate Backpack

08/05/2011 11:18 AM

With high tech devices becoming much more affordable for everybody, some simple existing products can be transformed to add secondary functions to this product.

What would your futurustic backpack do if we told you that we could make you the backpack of your dream?

For example, mine could be used as a battery charger, fully waterproof with a camel-bak inside.

I'd like to receive any ideas from you as it will clarify the expected functions from such a backpack.

Thanks,

Cheers.

Mine would walk behind me so I wouldn't have to lug it around.

Not a backpack anymore - more like a motorised barrow that can push you (also called a car hehe); not really useful in small forest trails, or well, I rather buy an ATV. It makes me think of that japanese human/cyborg actuated robot body made to lift heavy object. One should look at this.

http://www.cyberdyne.jp/english/robotsuithal/

I saw a video where the guy was lifting about 100 kg of rice without even having problem with his back; and he ain't a shaolin. Only a normal guy with an intelligent suit.

no.. not motorized. but it could have an electric assist for hills.

just able to carry a one-person camp, water, shelter, food, clothing, and gear.. maybe 200lbs, and if it was only 2 feet wide, with a bit if articulation in the wheels, no reason it can't go in the rough terrain..

if you want to spend a week or two in the wilderness, this unit could carry pretty much everything you might need.

When you ask what he ultimate backpack is, you begin to address the weight problem. If you have every carried 100lb pack, you begin to appreciate what a barrow style could do for you, even or especially in rough terrain.

the list of carryable gear is extensive. and it changes based on your mission/location.

if a woodland location, then wood cutting gear is appropriate. and not required in the desert. What about hunting gear? what about water filtration? what about batteries and solar chargers? what about artic weather gear? (in which case, my design would get skis instead of wheels)

if the pack weighs 200 lbs, and the barrow geometry loads the wheels with 2/3 of the weight, then the load on the human is 75 lbs or so, I think. (depending on the hill)

Sorry are you carrying "stuff" or bodies?

That diagram looks like a backpack for hired assasins or a hearst for low cost funerals! If i had to describe the shape: 'coffin-like' comes to mind

My backpack would fold/unfold into a car or airplane to transport me to my next destination!

Save on parking spaces!

it is what I think would work.. I don't really care if it looks like a coffin.. or a piano.... lol.. but not the first time I've heard that...

it is the old native Travois, with wheels and an articulated shoulder harness, for people instead of horse.

cheers

Ahh so! It has a familiar ring to it - Eqypt building the pyramid

harnessing humans to move large rocks...and carrying large straw packs filled with sand and gravel....imagine if they'd had your backpack design..

Haha. It must still be a backpack, not a car or a robot - nothing new here =P. Plus that outdoor adepts have no problems walking and supporting their own weigth ;). Good ideas though. This uber backpack could be a jetpack.

Wheels and shaped like a couch.

I thought the idea was to leave all that behind not take the luxuries of modern man into the wilderness.

If you need all that to enjoy nature there's the Nature Channel.

I would want it to be completely watertight, able to go for a long duration swim, have a camelpack inside, a well insulated compartment to keep my lunch/drinks cold, and enough space to strip all my layers off to shove inside when I need to swim across the river.

In addition, I would want a small compartment to hold the cellphone/MP3 Player which is also watertight, but has a pair of built in waterproof earbuds which extends from one of the shoulder straps.

The back layer which is in contact with the body should be of a mesh type material, and easily breathe, so the wearer does not get a nice wet sweaty back when wearing it in the summer months.

A front clip to completely lock the backpack onto the body for a snug/comfortable fit is essential.

Multiple compartments for a neat and organized bag.

Atleast there's someone who's not taking my post as a joke(not that I dont like them). Thx RV. That type of bag would only make trips in nature more practical, not eliminate its beauty. It d be made for modern outdoor adepts and could be used as an emergency device for medium to long adventures in the wild. I love the fully watertight idea. This would be one of the main challenge for such a product.

I would buy one if I could keep it on my back, and float down the river snorkeling etc all day and still have all my nice and dry things when I get out of the water.

A cooling device for the camel-bak powered by all those electrons you aren't using because you turned off your phone so you could enjoy your walk? Also many more smaller pockets.
