Data collection tool?

04/18/2007 9:14 PM

I am searching for a complete (hardware and software) data collection/logging system for measuring flow-rate and pressure mainly to be used in fluid dispensing systems. Does anyone have any suggestions as to manufacturers?

Hi Guest,

Have you tried searching on GlobalSpec yet? If not here is a link to some flow measurement info. GlobalSpec Flow Measurement Search

If you would like like more specific info, please define the flow rate, pressure levels, and appropriate (dimensional) sizing for your application. Several years ago, I worked on some volume displacement projects so I may be able to provide a little insight. These projects required the volume of fluid to be quantified, so I was mainly interested in the amount of fluid moved through a system and not so much the rate at which the fluid was moved.

fm!

Flowrates ranging from 8 oz to 60 gal/min. Pressure ranges of 0-100psi and pipe sizes from 1/4" to 2". Obviously these applications will require more than a single piece of measuring eq. Maybe this helps? Thank you for any suggestions.

National Instruments have some good products.

Additional,

If you can find some card or device that can accept the signals from your instruments and convert them to RS232 or USB, you can use Excel to display and make trends. I've seen it done but I don't know Visual Basic so I can't help you with software side.

Additionally to NI mentioned by Vulcan, there are Onset in the US and Pico in the UK. Both good and relatively inexpensive.

I've used a Webtec portable datalogger in the past to collect pressure data in a hydraulic system (model MC100). It also had the capability to take flow data, temperature data, and speed data. They also have larger, non-portable systems, data collectors, and also offer the sensors themselves (pressure transducers, flowmeters, etc.) and packaged units. www.webtec.co.uk.

As an extension to the discussion I want to aks the experts in fluid flow area a few questions

1 is there a nondestructive and non invasive method / tool for measrement of fluid flow in side a pipe line ?

2 can a doplar measurement possible in this context ?

3 cann it be used to determine the degree of roughness inside the pipe ?

4 is sound measurement some function of the fluid velocity across the pipe ?

any tool to determine the degree of and change in the roughness profile inside the pipe

I've heard of ultrasonic devices measuring the thickness of the pipe but not the roughness. To do that, I think the ultrasonic frequency would need to be quite high to get enough resolution. I don't believe you could measure flow and measure roughness using the same device though, at least not for the present.

No need to re-invent the wheel! This looks like a the systems used in the oil patch for data aqusition and wellhead control. They can be solar powered and radio linked as well.
