Nickel Wire

08/07/2011 12:07 PM

I am located in the U.S. and have access to a large quantity (72 kg) of 0.025mm dia. nickel wire for sale. Purity is 99.8% (Certificate of Analysis from IGAS is available). This is a one-time spot market opportunity to purchase Ni wire below wholesale.

Can anyone give me some direction as to who might use this type of material and/or who might be interested?

Thanks

How the heck you gonna put 72 kg in your lunch box at the end of shift?

Fork lift, an F350 and one tarp. You would be surprised what has been done.

Don't you just hate it when you suddenly have over 150 lbs. of "scrap" wire just show up unexpectedly?

I Googled "metal traders" and got dozens of hits, such as this one:Green Metal Traders Home

You might also contact metal sprayers in your area.

There is also a commercial section here, too.

Registering might have gotten you a more friendly response. I don't normally respond to anonymous posters, at all.

Thanks. This is my first time using this forum and wasn't aware that being anonymous was a bad thing... I'll see if I can change it.

You're welcome Lou.

Have you considered e-bay/craig's list, etc. (Not an endorsement)

Hang around, there are some characters here.

Yeah, I'd put it on e-bay. But change your name to Suzy first. Ever time I buy something that can't possibly sell that cheap, it always comes from someplace like Suzy's House of Copper Pipe in Shanghai.

What would you be willing toaccept for that spool?

Make an offer. I've been given lots of numbers regarding the value but being a neophyte at this, the numbers seem to be all over the map. Everything from $1/meter to $10/meter... can you explain the difference?

I have a certificate of analysis from IGAS... 0.025mm extruded Ni wire (purity grade 99.80-99.89%). The total quantity is 72kg (which, at 227 m/gm, translates to 16.3 million meters!) I was told that LME wholesale fluctuates between $10 -$12 per meter.

Hi Lou, Did you ever find a buyer for the nickel wire 99.8%. If so can you share with me what market they came from and if they want to buy massive larger quantities?

Thanks quintian1

That is some extremely fine gauge wire. When I first read this, I thought of wire for guitar strings. When I focused on the diameter, I saw that the wire is approximately that of a human hair strand or less, depending on the source.

It must have been targeted for some really specialized application - government research, maybe. I would speculate that the project is now dead, and this wire is just lying around collecting dust.

What is the form of the wire? Is it in one large spool - a continuous length of the wire, or multiple spools?

I seriously can't think of an use for the wire, and, if a buyer can't either, you will probably only be able get scrap value for it - not anywhere close to $1.00/meter or £, €, or ¥/meter for that matter.

How did you come into posession of this anyway? I think that's a fair question to be asked by a potential buyer.

Mikerho...

Yes, this is specialized wire but not so rare that there shouldn't be interested buyers. This wire is used in several industries... nanotechnology, automotive, electronics, etc. I believe that there is a market in medical as well. The wire is exturded and is ready for coating. It is on multiple bobbins and the purity has been certified by IGAS.

Thanks for the advice. Sorry you're not a prospective buyer.

Maybe Shelob is investigating alternative materials?

Even US$1/meter is a huge price per pound. This made me wonder if it was 0.025 inch wire (as might be suitable for welding), or 0.025 mm2 wire (~0.18 mm for low current electronics maybe?). But a search on 0.025 mm wire indeed turned up some international suppliers, typically with minimum order quantities of a few kg. This amounts to $10K or $100K ranges, if not more. That's more than a wheel of Gouda!

I'd like to be sitting on such a gold mine.

Sounds like relay winding wire from the gauge, but if it's not coated then totally unsuitable for that and I've never seen Nickel (magnetic material) used for relay windings.

I suspect that your pricing quotes are incorrect and that someone has quoted the fabrication (extrusion or drawing) costs per pound or Kg rather than the material costs. (Ballpark similar to drawing costs for copper in similar diameter.)

The other features that would be of interest to any potential purchaser is the consistency of the diameter (and thus the resistance) and the hardness (ease to de-spool). I suspect this may be why the wire was not coated and has ended up where it is.

Good luck

I think that wire of such size could be used in making mesh strainers, filters and the like. Like you, I don't believe there is an electromagnetic application for this.

Make cheese cutters and sell them on TV, Ebay, Craigs List for $19.95 and if you act now, double the orders! Just pay additional shipping and handling. You'll make much more money using 3 inches per cheese cutter. And they will last a life time depending on the material used for the actual wire holder. Who doesn't want a nickel cheese cutter? I'll take 2 please!

how much does just one spool weigh?

there may be a use in EDM machines.

We have 4,543,405 meters of Nickel wire (NP2) (CAS 7440-20-0). Physical dimensions 0.025mm (0.001in) dia, hard, 99.89% (Metal basis) The nickel wire's electrical resistance is 0,00004025 ohms/meter based on a specific resistance of 0,0082 ohms/(mm^2*m). The Total weight of of the 4,543,405 meters is 44.12 pounds and is 99.89% pure. Independent Global Assay Service (I.G.A.S). I.G.A.S also performed the lab analysis. Based on I.G.A.S lab results and Alfa Aesar's (www.alfa.com) published catalogue price, the current per meter value of nickel wire with a purity value of 99.89% is €88.40 Euros ($97.65 USD) ($443,663,498.25).
