In Search of Lab Equipment

08/11/2011 3:50 PM

Working on formulating cosmetics, in need of a more robust mixer, currently using a drill with a paint mixer, it gets the job done for most things but doesnt have the control or speed needed for mixing polymers. i would like to find a IKA LAb mixer on the cheap if possible.

Any ideas on where to find one?

A search of GlobalSpec 'Fluid Mixer" came up with this list. Not sure about "on the cheap", but there are many different sizes and types to select from.

You may have to register at GlobalSpec to view. Fast, easy, and a good resource.

Check with your closest university. It's hit and miss, but the one near me has sales every so often with all kinds of equipment and you name it. Everything is pennies on the dollar.

One time I scored a large fireproof safe, in good shape, with the combination, for $1.00. I checked when I got home and something similar would retail for about $1200.

I don't know if a food mixer would work, but often times restaurant supply companies will sell used equipment.

Put a free ad on craigslist for what you are looking for............someone might come out of the wood work.

1.00 for a 1200.00 item !!! I wonder how that affects the cost of a career on that university .

(You could also make a profit re-selling on e-bay ).

It wouldn't be worth the shipping..............it weighs about 200 lbs.

Lots of ebay sellers hit those sales though. Some pretty high tech equipment sells very cheap.

OPM.................it's no big deal. Everything is bought with other people's money. They just need to get rid of it so they can buy new stuff.

Where I live you could get over $20 as recycled metal, unless it is mostly ceramic (high temp insulation)- what is the sate made out of?

As to posting, even the local community college (or the students) here sells lab equipment in good shape for a song. A local ad might bring action.
