Min Distance Between Shell Weld Seam and Nozzle

08/12/2011 3:05 AM

Hello Can anybody suggest the minimum required distance between longitudinal/circum weld seam and nozzle. Is there any requirement in ASME codes Div 1 or 2. As per shell standards, it is 50mm or 2t whichever is greater. But confused with the value of 't' whether it is the thickness of shell or nozzle.
Here im attaching my drawing Regards Vijeesh

In this instance, t = shell thickness.

ASME does not include requirements for distance between welds. Longuitudinal welding must be x-rayed prior to welding the connection (Nozzel). Beware the thickness, the material and the service, you may require PWHT.

This distance is important in view of future repair of the weld seam if required, in that case gap of 2t, (twice thickness of shell plate) is neccessary.

Dear Halim, That was a perfect shot. Can you pl. share your experience with us: why 2.5t and not 2.0t in this case, as 2.0t is the normal industry practice? regards
