Wish you all the best

08/16/2011 12:26 AM

CR4ers,

Recently a post of mine was reported to CR4 Admin (and it deserved to be). This led to a very polite email from a CR4 moderator asking me if I wanted the conversation where the comment was made closed. I was very embarrassed and told the moderator to do as they thought best.

I should have never put that moderator in such an awkward position. CR4 is make believe, not real, and when it spills over into my work life, that's a wake up call.

So I wish you all the best. I enjoyed being a member of CR4 and I enjoyed my discussions with all of you. I've been a member for over 6 years and it's been a very enjoyable experience. There is no doubt that I will miss the forum, but it's time to move on.

Best Regards,

Roger

I'm sorry that matters have come to this, and am unsure of why any of your posts should have been "reported."

Re: Wish you all the best

I find this quite interesting - as there is Yin and Yang in everything.

Points to consider;

A. The conversation was on the verge of "potentially productive" and likely interesting to many others as it centered around points made by AH, Red Fred, Del, Tornado, JohnDG, Kramarat, Garthh, to name those that come to mind.

B. Because the post cited is almost certainly the one directed at me - it's principally my right to be offended, or whatever, and do any reporting.

C. I was not offended, or upset, in the least, or even thought for a second of reporting. To assume I was, presumes far too much.

D. BECAUSE; when people are impassioned about something, you have to expect some spill over from time to time.

E. And because; if you are limited to some anonymous PC clown's 3rd party values, it's near impossible to get anywhere.

F. Roger; Statistically/scientifically; 1 dummy spit in 1000's of posts is unsupportable frequency for your conclusion.

G. The covert/'back door' nature of this "reporting presumption", is quite key to the outcomes.

Personally; it's high time people who wish to presume/vote 'emotionally' and/or 'negatively': displayed the gonads to do it visibly. Doubly gutless, if the intention was others would presume I did it.

I.e. Had I known that Roger had been reported and had I been asked about it, I would would have pitched for nulling of the report. And you all can count that statement as my current position.

Bringing us to the Yang of this

G. That reporting directly produced the grandstanding victim replay, that is this thread and was the driver of 'original post'.

So: What did it achieve, aside from reinforcing a negative?

I guess that goes back to rule number five. I assume the owners of the site don't want to be held culpable for the negative tone the thread was taking.

Even though longstanding caveats about how site owners aren't responsible for the comments and content of the posts (hijacked though it were), it may still reflect poorly on the company name at the top of the page.

Especially when one considers the employer of the OP.

If they held the GS bloggers to any kind of standard, I might agree

but in the end it is their little goat rodeo

no harm in noticing or in my case commenting

noticing & commenting got me on ol rog's DNR [do not respond] list some months ago

threads go where they go, generally without interference [moderation], we're all big boys & girls, able to give as good as we get

This Blog entry instigated by a GS Blogger is political from post 1. the lines get blurry, technology doesn't know whether or not there are political ramifications ...

A lot of roger's threads were purely political and started out of his anger over something. So what? Plenty of people jumped into the fray. What made this one different? They're all the same...........with pretty much the same rage being expressed.

They should just start a CR4 section called The Badlands, throw a disclaimer on it, and be done with it. Roger, and anybody else that wants to fight with him, or each other, could go there and have at it. No real foul language or porn would be the only rules.

The thread was closed because several of those who were still participating were unable to do so rationally. Some users were using poor language that needed to be censored and others were attacking one another rather than the topic. I think that reason exceeds the number of characters for the reason for closing a thread so the moderator used politics as a reason. Yes, it was a political thread, but politics can be discussed without throwing in f-bombs or name-calling.

And no, we won't be instating a politics section anytime soon. If something on-topic happens to bring politics into play that's okay as long as it's relevant to the discussion. (For example, it's inevitable with the shuttle program these days.) If the discussion gets out of hand the thread will be closed - just like with anything on CR4.

There are plenty of other forums for the discussion of straight-up politics. CR4 isn't that place. You can visit another forum or take it elsewhere (email, private message) if politics are your area of interest.

You're right of course. These antiscience threads were the only ones that were pure politics, and where the OP came down squarely on a particular side of the debate from the start. Arguments were inevitable. They were started out of anger, and anger continued. Some of us got out of hand..................guilty as charged.

Hi Savvy and team

I admire the people who take the time and edit what has to be edited because it goes against written rules. This clearly shows that your insistence on post hygiene is consistent with your (and the few others that bother) companies standards.

From the very first response by RP, years ago, we turned nemesis's and my promise not to get into any discourse with the gentleman was broken. Just couldn't help myself.

You know, in my experience there is more to it than knowledge of ones subject, it is also important in the way it is presented. Making RP aware of that is our duty, or at least mine. In other threads posters are ridiculed and they don't spit the dummy but learn from what poisons a thread.

I mean really, we have all witnessed threads going haywire and end up and die just like your average day does. In exhaustion or party time. Sometimes even staying with the 'beast' that rules ones life til the cows come home.

What I meant to say is that people with a behavior pattern such as RP's has and will not be able to settle into the real world. Not at uni nor in the pub nor on a space shuttle or sitting inside an air-conditioned instrument, while looking into the past and not being funded in accordance with the whims of.......Oh oh. I'll leave it there.

Ah, and, a genius is not created on the web, a genius is. And we all know what that looks like when we see it or hear it. At least I can still recognize the Charlatan or false prophet in many fields. I don't wish turning this into some church meeting either.

Nobody wants church rules of whatever persuasion. Besides, you guys (admin) must be creaming your selves sometimes. Yeah, that fun bit is SO underrated and can be clean as. I've encountered jokes and clever remarks here that would beat any standup show.

Gotta go.

Kind regards, Ky.

Actually, there were issues (that were reported) and they were moderated out. I guess you didn't see them. The closure had nothing to do with the creator of the thread. It was closed because it went way outside the scope of CR4 and its policies.

Additionally, you'll notice that Roger's comments are moderated with a "reason" and the comments of the poster he was corresponding with were removed because they were "irrelevant". I don't see how that's favoritism.

the stricken comment were in no way profane

nor was the recipient of Roger's rebuttal bothered by what was written

Roger communicated with a moderator that wasn't me. I came in bright and early and started doing my thing without any knowledge of the story you've quoted. I moderated the posts to adhere to our standards. As to why the replies were completely removed - they contained very little on-topic content; it was mostly rebuttal to the pieces of Roger's posts that had been removed. There were also other posters that needed to have content removed/adjusted for other reasons.

As far as I'm concerned this topic is closed (not in the literal sense - in the sense that I can't say anything else about it that I haven't said before). Everyone agreed to our terms, including moderation, when they signed up for this site. It exists on most sites (even Internet newspapers). It's a fact of the web.

Roger's gone. Let's all move on.

plausible denyability is a wonderful thing

there are no consistent "standards" being adhered to [we're at the whim of whatever moderator drew the short straw for a particular time period]

Roger got preferential treatment always has, always will [don't let him fool you he'll be back]

this is not unusual or unexpected

there is no reason to try to explain it away with other possible scenarios [is there really that little communication between moderators?]

the coverup is always more damming than the "crime"

you don't have to keep talking about it

it would be fitting if this thread being closed down were the epitaph for the

Mighty Penguin Hunter

The topic in hand at the point of moderation was vaccination. Roger raised this. But: purely medical. Zero political content. Zero 'f-bombs'. Zero 'abuse'.

Ok, Roger took to baiting - but still with zero 'f-bombs', zero political.

As for how it was 'fairly' moderated - the majority of Rogers 'baiting' was left standing and 100% of response (again 'zero, zero, zero') was deleted as "irrelevant".

So, in the Admin "favoritism" sense; 'changing the subject', retrofitting 'cause', massaging the visible, seeking to offset 'fault' to others - none of whom have any responsibility for what Roger types.

Sure some members react to Rogers baiting. I tend not to and stick to facts, which frustrates him. This time he just went a bit over the top. If left standing in full (including Rogers second attempt) the exchange didn't do a lot for Rogers image.

And that is the sum of it.

I'm the one that lost it. Shame on me.

It was the usual baiting, I fell for it again. roger, as usual, the innocent victim. This thread, like the others, served as a place for roger to put his far left ideology on display. I, as well as many others, strongly disagree. The smart ones stay away.

Anyone that doesn't agree with roger, is simply wrong.

Roger's been putting up some good threads lately. The antiscience should have been put to bed a long time ago.

CR4 is very addictive and it's easy to get overly involved in what, at the end of the day, is just a chat.

Roger is passionate about the anti-science stuff (and rightly so IMHO). Over in Blighty, we had an agonizing few years watching the Simon Singh libel case (of which JohnDG did a stirling job of reporting on CR4). The dweebs cannot be handled overnight. As far as I can read it, Roger's overall intent got overshot by other issues. That's a shame.

I'm uneasy about discussing somebody who has said, "I'm out", even though I reckon Roger is still reading. Nobody on CR4 really quits - they just take a break and regroup. There would be no point debating anything with folk who agreed with you all the time, though it's entirely possible to think you're getting **** kicked out of you in a corner.

Didn't that film say, "love means never having to say you're sorry"? Bit the same on a community forum such as this. If a topic goes pear-shaped, better to just say '******-it" for a few weeks, then come back refreshed to either address the issue or engage in a different topic.

My 2-cents, as I'm no longer interested in this sob-fest. That's not meant in an insulting way, simply that I'd rather spend time logged in here to have a laugh, try keep up to date on news, and engage in a bit of fun banter. Not very constructive on my part, though I occasionally try to think of a question.

I'd suggest we all get back to 'normal' CR4 stuff, even though that sounds a bit odd coming from me

It's all over folks, nothing to see here, please move on.....(as if that's gonna happen !

We don't need a badlands section. I will keep your suggestion in mind though.

PS- In case roger is reading along, the freshman class at the large university near me is comprised primarily of biomedical and engineering students. Perhaps the antiscience was overblown.

Roger,

I really don't see any reason to go fall on your own sword over whatever occured. There can't be many regulars who haven't had an "oh crap" momment.

If nothing else, just chill for a while (not with penguins) then post whenever the mood takes.

You must do as you feel best, but your many positive contributions far exceed any percieved 'wrong'. Heck, it's just a drop-in chat place, and life is too short for anything that leaves us feeling down.

I'm outta cliches - all best, and keep on smiling.

Roger, perhaps CR4 is out of free memory space by now that's why they want to delete your post.

But are you sure you are waving goodbye then? I mean once you are a member you can visit anytime you like.

Not to mention, i am become a cr4 addict now. I just joined a year ago, and become dormant in a while but hard to say good bye, really. I probably missed the fun, if i leave just like you.

Roger,

I can not say anything better than what has already been said in this thread.

I have always learned something from your posts and the ensuing comments whether I was in agreement or not.

IMHO we are all here to learn, enlighten, share some comradeship, laughs and jabs.

You have to do what you have to do but I hope you will reconsider your decision to leave the group.

Best Regards - KJK/USA

Re: Wish you all the best

I'm sorry to hear that roger. I've enjoyed our conversations, and even our arguments. I'm sure on a few of them, people can imagine that I'm throwing things around the room here where I am..............not true, I can argue with you on here and simultaneously, while typing, be talking to my wife about what we're having for dinner.

I don't think it should be necessary for you to leave. We touch on a few pretty charged subjects here from time to time. CR4 may exist in the digital domain, but our emotions and feelings are very real. Lot's of people have said things in the heat of the moment that are mean or stupid. As far as I know, they don't stick. They stay in the moment where they belong.

That said, if something you say on here, which can't be any worse than anything anybody else has said, runs the risk of impacting your work life, I guess I don't blame you.

Take care. And as always, no hard feelings from me. Your threads have saved my poor wife hours of listening to me whine and complain about the way things are. It's been fun. Thanks for giving me an outlet.

PS- I hope you don't hold my roger vote thread against me. That whole stupid thread was started in the heat of the moment.

Re: Wish you all the best

First, I just wanted to thank you all for your kind sentiments. I could have left without a "goodbye post", but I did it as an indulgence to my vanity (in the end, we all like to be liked, right?)

Anyway, I just wanted to clarify a few things:

Firstly, if doesn't matter who reported me, they were correct to do so. I lost my temper and my post was a personal attack on another user.

Secondly, I was not the usual CR4 member, no matter how much I tried to pretend I was. I work at GlobalSpec, which owns CR4, and that means that when I lose my temper and post rashly, I don't just embarrass myself (something I could easily live with), but I embarrass my company as well and put people I work with (CR4 Admin) in awkward situations. It simply isn't fair to them. Please don't misunderstand, the moderator was extremely polite about the situation, but I personally feel strongly it was unacceptable that I put them in that position.

Finally, I helped build CR4, but really CR4 is thriving now and no longer needs my help to grow. You all have created a wonderfully robust community that you all should be proud of. Though I may be gone, I will still be very proud of, and have kind thoughts for, CR4 and all of you. I mean that.

Hello Roger Pink, and all the rest of CR4.

I would offer an observation: I have never doubted that comments or opinions you have placed here at CR4 have been your own, and those comments do not reflect the opinions of GlobalSpec.

As the Engineer of CR4 you have every reason to be proud, and I believe you are. This is a wonderful place, with a cast of characters you could not possibly assemble for any purpose (unless maybe casting a new Little Rascals film).

Whether you irrevocably decide to vacate your seat as member #14 or not, I would like to say 'Thank You' for you efforts. I appreciate them.

Your friend at CR4, Doorman.

Roger,

I guess I missed the thread in question, but I'll weigh in with the others and say that your contribution to CR4 is appreciated and enjoyed, and I would be sorry to see you quit over one impulsive remark.

If your job puts you in a more delicate position, why not stay on, and be more ruthless with yourself than ever. I've seen you handle provocation in a very self-controlled manner. I know you can do it extremely well. Everyone makes a rough remark at some time, and I can only imagine a very naive spectator would consider that this isn't understood, forgiven and accepted by the parties involved.

You often bring complex and controversial topics to discuss, and that will be missed. You are often found at the center of a heated argument, with a fairly cool head. Although I don't often have time to engage in those complex topics, I do get to read parts of your threads and then go off to work with something to think about.

What I'm saying is, your contribution is unique - there's no one to fill the shoes of Roger Pink. If you can't stay on in your work boots, at least keep an old pair of slippers here, suitable for stepping up to the occasional soapbox.

"Anyway, I just wanted to clarify a few things:"

Interesting post; so Me too

Roger, I'm getting quite a bit of mail on this, both on and off CR4, wanting to know what was said and/or where. Including a number curious as to how I "provoked you", much as automatically assumed by some above.

I'm not sure how to answer these inquires, so some clarification from you would be of assistance.

Which of my posts in "The Kepler Mission- Antiscience's Next Victim" would you class as the most provocative, or the last straw? The 'naming' comments, or my response to your raising of 'vaccination'?

Sparkstation may not have left by choice but Steve, Blinkey and now Roger Pink (and I'm sure many others) have made the choice to leave when things were not fun anymore. Every internet site has a few people that will rub you the wrong way. It doesn't matter who you are because somewhere out there there is always someone to annoy you.

May I suggest that others do what I do. When it is not fun I don't come back for a few days. I've done it several times. It works well.

Bruce

Count me in! C'mon, Roger, I've probably got High Score for doing dumb things and thinking about it later, but let's not go into that.

While I didn't always agree with your posts, at least they forced me to think out of my comfort zone. It'd be a shame to lose someone that could coerce a stubborn old shade tree mechanic to do that!

Mr Truman came up with a good one. I don't think Roger's decision is about us or what we think.

I don't think Roger feels as if he can run with the dogs when he happens to be employed in the deans office of the university. It's understandable.

I'm not voting Roger out. Maybe an 'enter at your own risk' sign on the antiscience threads. They tend to be political and heated from the start.

This can be the new report button.

Re: Wish you all the best

one-upmanship [wʌnˈʌpmənʃɪp]

If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.Prov. If the pressures of some situation are too much for you, you should leave that situation. (Somewhat insulting; implies that the person addressed cannot tolerate pressure.)

Simon asserts "You're so vain, you probably think this song is about you."

Very immature your decision Roger. This (CR4) is not about you at all. It's about people wanting to solve problems that are real and not splitting hairs about matters that do count in some circles (mine included) but are difficult to identify and dissect properly by others.

Just reciting and making grandiose claims and belittling, lecturing, influencing Anti whatever has and will not help solving problematic situations. Be they of a technical or social nature.

(the way you call into the wood is the way it will echo back at you)

You can't be really surprised about people reacting, responding to your way of 'make belief' and citing this and that and grandstanding on others shoulders. It's such a see through maneuver, at least I can see through it.

I wonder what would happen to you if you took part in a yacht race (Sydney to Hobart maybe?). You could be the builder of the yacht but nobody would care. They can't because the wind, water and its temperament will make the rules and the fitness and stamina is asked for, not any participating in "Oh I designed the keel and I was one of the first to take part in this race".

Founded CR4......cracked up laughing. It was never founded really it is still in the midst of being created. It's like Julian Assange saying he founded and legalized spying. Rubbish, it's been happening ever since.

Childish, unskilled behavior and not worthy of any further comment, well, maybe one more:

May you come to your senses one day and be part of the (a) team and not behave like a 'Mr. know it all' and You say and I say sort of style. Every western educated person knows that italic means it was said by some one else and not by the author. Why try and reinvent the wheel? Gosh, and I said that many times you annoy the .... out of me.

Well, I'll miss you any way. No more adrenalin boosts from whatever 'Anti' you have come up with.

Oh, gotta go, so much more to do it's not funny. Talking about funny, your lack of humor is your worst enemy. Get over it and start a new post. The one on vaccination would be nice and controversial. I'll be in like Flyn.

Wish you all the best, no, really, Ky.

I'm not even sure myself of the point herein, but this seems a bit topical. I pinched it* and modded a little;

It was a mate's funeral this week. He was always a practical joker, and fair play, he made us laugh right to the end. Silly *****r had the coffin rigged somehow so that when it was being lowered into the ground, a tape of him saying, "Ha! Fooled you... I'm alive!" started playing. It was followed by things like, "Lads... Really. I'm not dead, let me out!" We were all in stitches. Even the Mod was pissing herself.

RIP Roger... ****ing legend.

Good taste was never my strong point. If anyone is offended, well, you shouldn't read the OT's

Roger, don't be so harsh on yourself and so rash to jump ship quickly.

We've all done and said things in this forum that we later regret.

I've fallen on my own sword too many times. Yeah, I've left this place several times and had joined other engineering forums online, only finding myself wanting more and more CR4 Forum as time marched on, so I came back trying to be better and less reactive to the Trolls and back-biters among us.

Please, seriously reconsider leaving the Forum. I think it matters not a hoot if you work for GlobalSpec or not as we all have our bad days and our good days as well!

In the event that you choose to leave I wish you well and good luck in any endeavor Good Neighbor (I'm a former Capital District resident myself.....grew up in Burnt Hills and have worked throughout the CD Region nearly my entire adult life).

Peace be with you! You and your invaluable contributions to this site will be greatly missed if you leave.

Roger,

It's just a blog! On the way home stop off and pick up a bottle of cab, maybe 2 (my personal recommendation) and relax tonight. I have no clue what this is really about, who cares? Clearly several people enjoy your stuff. And you're right that CR4 can continue without you, and me, and many others. In a way we're like a family. Not everyone is the same, but we always get along. You think you went over the line, okay you went over the line. Hit the reset, that's what it's for. I've only actually read a few of your posts. All of them were well thought out and a bit provocative. People like myself come here just for that reason!

I conducted a secret vote and you have to stay. So sorry pal but we don't accept the resignation. Take a few days off and report back here on Monday just like nothing ever happened.

It is 10.50 PM in India. i have had my two large scotches. Absolutely must not post in this condition as i have told myself a number of times.

Still, the best frame of mind to introspect. This thread has brought forth the best and (pardon my saying so) the worst side of well-respected CR4ers.

On the one hand, the fervent appeal not to quit for the wrong reason. On the other hand, picking at the scabs of the not-quite-healed wounds that caused this in the first place....

How nice it would be if we could count to ten bafore writing a post which is irrecoverable... words said in anger, not recallable...sigh.

Ok, time to go to bed. G'night all.

So far, I've kept out of this one. Roger's posts didn't generally excite me.

But, as one who has scorned, and been scorned, I remind you that we are all here at the pleasure of Global Spec.

I can think of no other forum I'd join if this one went away.

Roger,

I'm sorry to see you go but I do understand your reasons. I hope that you lurk back to this thread or that somebody at Globalspec taps you on the shoulder for you to see my late reply because I have something important to say...

I Thank You for helping to form CR4. This quirky little community has helped me in so many ways.

I Thank You for your passionate championing of the true scientific spirit as it sadly wanes in our country.

I Thank You for the insightful links to many different science related stories.

I particularly Thank You for directing me to the book "Not Even Wrong" by Peter Woit. (I've only gone through the first two chapters and I'm loving it.)

Be good to yourself, my friend.
