Transformer Connection

08/17/2011 6:26 AM

Dear friends

I am working in a small transmission system having 12nos 132/33 transformers. All of them are rated 125MVA. Vector group is Ynd5. 132kV side neutral of all our transformers are solidly earthed.

Now a new consumer is requesting a 132kV connection from our grid. They propose 132/11kV 40MVA transformer at their end. The vector group proposed by them is Dyn11

Is there any protection and operation related problem in using this this vector group transformer in our system.

Raju

An interesting "on-your-feet" (homework, interview, water-cooler, etc.) question. Since it is short on details let's try something different. Why don't you provide your solution to this question and we will provide our comments on your answer. Fair enough? Looking forward to your reply.

I do not foresee any problem.

It does not matter what the customer's vector group is. Your primary connection will likely be a delta. They will adjust their rotation as needed.

Why do you care about the customer's Tx configuration? Be it "Y" or "D" . . .?

Your customer will soon find out that he can not purchase a transformer with a 132kV delta connected winding. I do not know of anyone offering - or using a Delta connection @ 132kV.

That's dealing with reality. In the mind anything is possible.

You are incorrect that the customer cannot purchase a transformer with 132kV delta primary. Many (I would venture to say most) distribution station transformers fed from a transmission-level voltage (100kV and above) will be delta-wye. It's usually transmission station transformers (often auto-transformers) and generating station transformers (usually wye-delta) where we see a wye connection.

Just for grins, I just did a little searching of some vendors I know, and saw for sale on the used apparatus market several 40MVA, 161kV D - 13.8kV Y transformers, several 50MVA, 138kV D - 13.8kV Y, and others. There is no technical or physical reason that what the OP stated is impossible.
