Forging Test Coupon

08/18/2011 8:59 PM

A representative test coupon, a minimum of 6" in length, taken from a prolongation of production forged string shall be machined to the vertical and horizontal dimensions of the forging it represents at a frequency of at least one per heat or remelt ingot, per heat treatment load.

How do you understand the word of "prolongation "? Thank you.

I'd say that prolongation is the same as pressing or forging as in a factory. Each prolongation would yield a thinner product, but would produce a stronger "forging".

After a run of forged pieces, some extra (≥ 6") infeed material is also run through. The test coupon is taken from this extra, rather than sacrificing an entire forging.

[I think.]
