Going Back to Past Employer

08/22/2011 4:23 AM

One of my friend has recently changed his company and joined new one. Reason for change is better package/growth. He left his old organization when he was at top in his work. But now he is feeling that work atmosphere is not good in new company. Also, since its pvt. organization, day to day working involves too much politics , non co-operation and pressure tactics by old fellows. He tried to adopt that culture . But now he feels that he should quit and rejoin his old organization. Is it advisable to rejoin his past organization? Is it possible that old organization may take disadvantage when deciding promotion/ increments etc. He asks me for advice.

If he hasn't "burned any bridges" in the past organization, a renewed relationship may be quite possible. I worked for a refrigeration contractor from 1975-1979, was hired away by a seafood catching/processing company from 1979-1986, and then went back to the same refrigeration company from 1986-1993. None of these positions remained permanent, but all were successful and rewarding for a time.

It's probably fine, but I wouldn't recommend that your friend leave on bad terms with his current employer either. This is assuming that his old employer wants him back.

Very few people find the perfect job. Most of us toil away and just have to deal with the things we don't like.

The days of lifetime loyalty to a company, or company loyalty to an employee, are over.

If this fellow was a good employee and left on good terms with his old employer he has nothing to loose by exploring the possibility of going back to work there again.

It is the most common problem with many people in service life.

Many of us assume that, just because our presence or leadership position, performance of the company is kept in good health. We forget one main point on the real value of the team.

Single company service people face this problem.

The change over of the organization by your friend should have taught him reality concepts about the real world situation.

Highly paid top position calls for quick show ups in improved performance on aspects like- Technology or productivity or quality or profitability or reduction of problems etc.If his first impression to the new management is not yet been proven, days are worth counting.

Managements count on results and not on your problems. In fact you are paid higher to gulp up the difficulties.

My suggestions to your friend could be in the following points

1]If you are looking back to join back the old company without their invitation, you are going to lose your respect. Come back cases in top positions never escape humiliation. So never look back.

2]Have your friend got the extra technical stuff to teach or show to others by way of strong technicalities? Then people should be fearing & show inclination to learn from you.If he is not technically strong, then it is high time to polish one's values & knowledge.

3] He can induct few of his past colleagues in his new plant, for elevated responsibilities so that he gets success.

4] More than his personal outlook or difficulties if he thinks about the teams' strength and weakness, he should have played effective co ordination and co operation from his new colleagues. May be you host a good will party to know the feelings of your new colleagues.

5]If your friend is smart enough in coming out with a scientific solution to the situation and come out with effective alternates he should be on a positive route.

6] He may demand more powers from his new management, if the situation is calling for.

7]If your friend had not yet made a good impression in the new company either he should make it or show some immediate signs of improvements.

8] Motivation is the best tool that even good leaders with average technicalities fair well in organizations.

9] Politics need to be tackled in group working.

10] Mutual change of interacting personnel is essential.

11] If the situation of your friend is not too bad, let him change his attitudes and convince others for contributions to the team goals.

12]Let him be a good listener to begin with consolidate values of his team mates.

13] If nothing works out, look out for either own ventures or wait for better openings else where in the industries. It all depends how much good will contacts he has got about, some body to vouch for him as well as job market openings.

May be that it is hard to think about, but a matter to be digested. It is all in the game.

The hard lessons will guide oneself about reality aspects of the external world at least.

So let him not give up & take control of the situation for himself, his team as well as justifications on his position and value to his new management.

Cheers and good luck

Good reply. I have over 35 years of work experience and even today I can work with my own hands just as I worked 30 years back. More over I love my job. being a maintenance manager I manage my team to excel in their performance. Yes due to extreme politics in engineering field also good people do suffer. Many successful manager who climbed corporate ladder fast followed "Guru Peter Druker". Like first invented gun-powder miss used to conquer world.

In my present company I am working for last 7 years and recently one such unit head asked me to resign due to "poor performance". This shocked many of my followers as well as competitors, colleagues, friends, etc. One top General Manager of a large Public Sector company called me to know whether our company is all set to go in wrong direction by asking people like me to resign. Yes it certainly disturbed me and many others. I am asked to stay back by one of our directors, but that is another story.

Coming back to your friends problem: He was in his comfort zone. The new assignment may be good for him but he is expecting same comfort zone as before. My advise is that he should work towards building comfort zone again in his new company treating it as a challenge.

Thank you K.V.Subramaniam Sir for the comments & inputs to the discussion.Nice of meeting you in CR4.

Keeping up the top most position, the struggle we find in animal herds, politics etc calling for acceptance, power, respect and confidence from the pals.Even Edison, being a strong scientist& innovator, as well the founder of General Electric company was expelled from G.E for incompatibility reasons.

One more reality fact is

*One man-reponsible totally

*Two men-differnce of opionion starts

*More than two men- Politics and groupism starts{which is very obvious in families, friendship groups, organizations/associations etc]

*More than 3, the complexity increases with population.

Survival of the fittest games

Empathy considerations are very important in group functioning, the failure of which causes all chaos.

Re: Going Back to Past Employer

Thnaks Mr.Udhayamathandan. After initial career as a technician I have added up my qualifications and grown to manager level & HOD. I achieved HOD level beating much more seniors at the age of 21 yrs. after working as HOD from 1981 to 1985 (join date: 1979), I changed my job and joined an MNC as a Technician but for very high salary. I was very successful; only thing I kept in mind to succeed that, now I am not HOD, as HOD who impressed me? I kept that person in my mind and performed my duties as a Technician and earned very good name, fame & money.

Since last 7 years I am not looking at money or position. I got two grown-up sons; one is working since last 4 yrs & younger at his finals. I am just enjoying achieving above world class maintenance standards & teaching youngsters. So far a Tehinically highly qualified person was heading our unit there was no prblem for me. Still some people play with people like me also; I do not think they get any benefit out of it, by doing what happened to me. I know management strategies; they think they have great management secret agendas; but I have seen big companies just shut because of foolish decisions & agendas. Our new non-technical unit head who asked me to go also has half knowledge about mankind, human values, life, etc; but wants to show management what????

thank you for your detailed views on the subject.

i actually showed all the replies form my associates in CR4. After long thinking he decided to settle on following things.

  1. As he joined this company for money . so he will continue the same.
  2. Regarding politics at company. He decided not to swim against the flow. He accepted ground things in the company.
  3. Regarding his interest to previous company. He contacted his previous boss about his willingness to join the company with respect.
  4. Also, he planned to engage in engg. blogs to brush up his knowledge and interests.
  5. Meanwhile he revised his CV and aggressively searching online for better opportunities.

Sanjaykangralkar,

It is so great of you and your sincere concern about your friend's despair and confused condition of status. On behalf all the members who have posted in this forum ,I would like to congratulate you for seeking moral and counselling solutions to your beloved friend who is really lucky to have a true friend like your good self.

Cheers & Regards

N.B: When I was facing a similar problem 10 years back in my past carrier,I took the decision of not going back to my long term served past employer, taken some few risks in new concerns, got fed up and switched over to teaching, improved my qualifications and simultaneously built my ambitious sustainable technology R& D laboratory and going ahead with optimism to serve globally.

It was feasible just because of the fact of risk taking by way of choosing the most untraveled path before me instead of the mostly travelled path[ old organization].

To be frank, the risk taken pays its fruits and the endless journey in search of adventures and new visions continues interestingly.

Whatever be the situation[ failure or success] the lessons learned are important and one should never feel handicapped that the world around him is shrinking without options and opportunities. World is too large and options are unlimited.

Unshaken faith in oneself and deeds, a strong self esteem and being hopeful till the tides pass away, lead any one to his destiny.

A friend in need is a friend in deed.

I consider to-days envoirnment in industry as "Kurushetra" (a battle ground). If you are smart and courageous you can be warrior and win the battles. If your friend is smart and can produce results then he can try any other job which is of his liking. I will suggest that until he is asked by his earlier employer to join them back, he should not go back with head down. Rather he may become laughing stock in the organisation
