This cannot really be done, because the standard dimensions are somewhat arbitrary and historical.

Within some limited ranges, the across-flats nut dimension equals 1.5 x the screw/bolt diameter, but this is not universal. Basically, one must rely on tables and manufacturers' data.

"Machinery's Handbook" and other references have such tables, along with drawings of thread forms, which are quite complex.

Don't bother. Use metric. Somebody has already done the design work.

Why not just buy the appropriate tap or die that corresponds to the specification, either metric or SAE.

Or, foreign concept here, just buy them.

You can't possibly need to "design" a unique fastener.

I wouldn't go QUITE that far Lyn, I've been in situations were there just wasn't anything "off the shelf" that would do. particularly when special chemistry/hardness limits were necessary to meet corrosion requirements, so there CAN be instances where that is necessary, it isn't COMMON, but it does happen...

I like the stirring but have to agree with this one. Could be making bicycles, or micrometers, or 'please no', not yet another hydraulic coupler system

Today's CAD packages come with comprehensive libraries of hardware which are as per the relevent standards... here is one example....

So, there is no longer any need to create a dimensionally correct model of a fastener....

Here a link to screw threads. It has some history, graphic examples, links to more info. Other than this, a Machinery's Handbook will have all the info you will need to form about any thread. The nut and thread size will be based on your applications/needs. But before you go reinventing the wheel there are a lot of special fasteners on the internet.
