Ratings of Transformer and Generator

08/28/2011 12:23 PM

Why transformer ratings in VA (i.e. apparent power) while generators can be rated in both VA as well as Watts ?

Is reactive power important for both? coz reactive power can never come into picture if load is pure resistive??

For a genset, the VA rating pertains to the generator; whereas the KW (or HP) rating pertains to the engine. In other words, both an electrical and a mechanical rating; but the tranformer needs only an electrical rating.

Yes, its true.

Transformer size is restricted by the temperature rise of the winding & insulation ( normally oil filled transformers , temp. rise limits are 45 deg. above Amb. of

40 deg.C) this is represented by VA rating.

what about protection against overfluxing?

why protection is provided for it, as it can be controlled by just changing the material of core?
