Does the ASTM A325 bolts need a charpy v-notch test for operating systems at -20 and -40 deg centigrade.

According to ASME Code, Section VIII, Div.1 (Fig. UCS-66), the bolt material A325 Grade 1 (diam. 13 mm to 38 mm) is exempted from impact test up to -30 oC. So, at -40 oC, impact test is required.

It depends on the application and the reasons for performing the low temperature impact test. There is no requirement for impact testing in ASTM A325 but there is provision for specifying it (along with grade, coating requirements, whether or not proof tests are required, etc.) in the Ordering Information, Section 3 of the specification.

The chemistry and hardness limits of these quenched and tempered bolts would normally be sufficient to ensure satisfactory low temperature performance.
