Good Mechanical Engineering Books for Beginners

09/12/2011 7:58 PM

Hi,
I'm a student in the process of getting a degree in physics, but I am going to go on and get a higher degree in mechanical engineering. I have just pretty much past the beginning stages of my major so I can't claim much advance knowledge that comes with my field of study. With this being said, I would like to know if any of you could suggest any book(s) that does a decent job in explaining mechanical engineering for beginners? Because I intend to try out for internships for next fall and I would like to have at least a little extra knowledge under my belt for this.
Thanks!

I would think finding a book would be duck soup for someone named R. T. Firefly.

I can't specifically recommend a book, but I've used some of the Schaum's Outlines series and found them to be very helpful. You might consider this one:

http://www.amazon.com/Schaums-Outline-Engineering-Mechanics-Nelson/dp/0070461937/ref=sr_1_8?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1315873345&sr=1-8

Groucho, the original Rufus T. Firefly.

A handbook of mechanical engineering and the REA Problem Solvers for Thermodynamics and Mechanics and Transport Phenomena should be a good start.

"Mechanical Engineering" is a very broad field.

What, specifically do you like to learn about ? Metallurgy, mechanics, thermo or what ?

More significantly, you don't want to prepare yourself for a career in a field that is slowing down or dying

Rather than suggesting books, I suggest that you read industry periodicals, then decide upon your specialty.

For example, if you are interested in power generation, subscribe to and read POWER magazine. ( www.powermag.com) for metals, perhaps the ASM publications.

Then, after you specialize, find the seminal books in the field and perhaps purchase used copies of them.

Good Luck

I would have to say do not get hung up on book for all your knowledge. The best way to learn is get your hands dirty and do some old fashoned work. Find a position where you are forced to get into the middle of which ever field or expertice it is you choose to follow. Should you want strictly mechanical work in a factory get to know how the machines work same for robotics. How ever if electrical is your thing then find a shop that rebuilds electric motors. The thing is book learning can only take you so far. The real knowledge comes from solveing problems. With out real world understanding problems do not get resolved. Books do not resolve the issues they only provide a direction to look for the answer. with this being said have fun get dirty and learn something.

Thank you Mr. rdsbdo1,

for your advise. Certainly it is a valid and good suggestion, and unless we get in to field work, the GLORY of ENGINEERING cannot be achieved.

I am proud to be a member in CR4 FORUM where we all are sharing our experience and knowlwedge.

Thanks,

RAJESWARI.
