RCBO'S

09/13/2011 9:41 AM

I am wondering if I "left the switch cover off" on a 240 v single switched fused spur, the wires although live are properly terminated, the circuit is protected by an rcbo 30milliamp rating, now I know, and you know that you cannot touch the terminals with fingers, Now if someone inserted a piece of metal onto the live terminal, he or she would make a circuit to earth and in 40 milliseconds the breaker would trip, would this cause an injury or burn? I know that the shock would not be fatal.

Colinp, how do you know the shock would not be fatal?

Because RCD's are intended to operate within 25-40 milliseconds which is before electric shock can drive the heart into ventricular fibrillation, which is the most common cause of death through electric shock

So is it wise to rely on them? Can one be 100.00% sure that such a shock is survivable?

Try it, if you survive let us know your findings.

If someone was foolish enough to insert a metal piece into what is obviously an electrical equipment, he deserves whatever happens to him. Most likely he is a thief looking to take away copper and other saleable things.

Did you leave any fingerprints ? If not, have a drink and go to sleep....
