These cars are the most trouble prone vehicles on the planet.

I'm reasonably sure somebody's noticed the forum attitude toward Chevy Cavaliers and is asking these questions just to bait the forum. While the consensus among the forum contributors is as you say: "...most trouble prone vehicles on the planet." I can't believe that we should be seeing a Cavalier question every two to three days. It's not as if a Web search brings them here.

I'll take that back; if you search for "chevy cavalier won't start" the first link is to CR4. I wonder if we can get the Google to fix that?

That's strange, I tried a couple of days ago to google chevy cavaliers and found nothing thinking the same thing, but your right, it's right there at the top. I just wonder how CR4 turned up as the place to go to with cavalier problems?

Do you know for sure the spark is no there when it dies? A clogged cat converter can do exactly that. IT IS NOT THE ONLY THING THAT WILL CAUSE THAT. Do you have a timing light? Hook it up, tape the trigger in the on position, point it towards the driver's seat. Get in and start the car. Watch the light as the car dies. did the light stop flashing before the engine died, or did it stop as the engine stopped?

If the light was flashing while the engine was dying, create an exhaust leak and retry. Take out the O2 sensor, or remove the EGR valve and block the intake passage with aluminum foil. or loosen the exhaust manifold from the head. Even a hole the size of a pencil will allow the car to continue to run, if the exhaust was clogged.

Stop throwing parts at it, and test. good luck.

Are you putting the gas petal down while you start it? That could be the problem, you don't want to flood it.

You can't flood a fuel injected vehicle.

put noid light on injector thats were i loos fire when it shuts down.

You are confusing me now. Loosing fire, or running out of fuel? If you want to stop guessing, and fix it, you are going to have to do some testing.

If not, let me know, I have a lot of parts that I can sell you cheaply. Some work, some not, but it does not matter till you find the defective part now does it? Use the timing light and know weather it is fuel or spark.

Jimmy, have you actually tried any troubleshooting other than shot-gunning parts at it? That in itself is not only costly, it's frustrating. It's not very effective, unless you get lucky and happen to fix the problem by mistake. Do you have any trouble-shooting skills and a comprehensive repair manual for your 2000 Cavalier? If not, you need to invest $20.00(US) and buy one, especially if you plan on keeping this car. Most decent manuals will have a troubleshooting flow chart and if you follow the flow chart, you can narrow down the problem without throwing a bunch of parts at it. But you have to follow the steps as prescribed in the flow chart otherwise you'll be back here asking the same questions. Now, did you look at the links Lyn suggested in comment #1? And did you try what Bob C recommended? That's a simple way of narrowing down the problem to either fuel, ignition or exhaust.

You said, "Car starts runs for 5 to 10 sec. Then shuts off", like what Bob C said, this could be caused by an exhaust system plugged up or it could be, not enough fuel volume to the injectors caused by either a weak fuel pump or a fuel pick-up strainer plugged up or water in the fuel.

Without doing some very basic troubleshooting, your wasting your time and money.

Good Luck, DJ

Did you change the air filter? If I paint it with clear enamel you get same results. Did you replace the wiring harness? If it has rubbed a bare spot against a metal part, engine movement will give the same results.

Cam sensor, crank sensor, throttle position sensor, MAP sensor, O2 sensors, coolant sensor, fuel pump pick up tube, fuel pressure regulator, fuel injector(s), ignition coil, ignition switch, steering column harness, battery cables, ground straps, any and all of these items can and will stop a car dead in its tracks.

You can lead a horse to water, but you can not make them drink.

it's your key. the chip went bad. it will cost about $40.00 to replace it at the dealer.

or are you trying to use a duplicate key?
