For consumption over a period of time, subtract successive readings of the gas meter. For instantaneous consumption rate, you could install a rotameter, which is inexpensive. Other types of flow meter are probably too costly for residential use.

Gas India Ltd who supplies CNG gas to consumers in Mumbai through pipe lines, has fitted gas meters in each house. I do not know about botteled LPG cylinder gas meters.

An inexpensive bathroom or linear spring scale could be adapted to weigh a fuel tank or cylinder. Even a simple spring under one side of the fuel container would let you see the tilt of the container, which might be good enough for estimating. (I once had a propane barbecue like this.)

Some years ago I saw a strip you could apply vertically to the side of a propane cylinder. When using the barbeque, the gas evaporating cooled the liquid remaining in the cylinder and the tank become cold up to the level of the liquid. The strip then changed colour at the level line. I don't know if they are still available, but they were very cheap.

There are also translucent propane tanks made of filament-wound fiberglass (or similar), making the fuel level directly visible.

hi !

Gas consumption monitoring with gas flow meter is very expensive one.

I am monitoring my cooking gas [ LPG Cylinder] consumption by using weighing scale.

[mechanical weighing scale available at doctor]

When you get sealed cylinder . Check the weight. This weight is actually Tare cylinder wt. + Gas WT. [14.2 Kg in india]. The tare cylinder wt. is always marked on the cylinder.

Make a chart [ in excel is great] of date wise gas consumption. Always fix a time to take readings [ late night better] . Record the consumption in chart. Plot a graph. Make calculations for average daily consumption and pattern of consumption.

Now you have a data, next time you can check the weight on weekly basis. So that you will get idea on consumption. Also, you can plan for refill booking to avoid delay.

I am getting very good results with this. Now, i check the weight once or twice.
