Yes, though it will also react more readily with the chlorine present in this sodium chloride solution as there is rather more of it.

Aluminium/seawater is not a good idea. Not if the aluminium is intended to last, anyway - even if the Cole Parmer Materials Compatibility Database rates it as "B".

3 I2 + 2 Al → 2 AlI3 This spontaneous reaction produces 314 kJ per mole of aluminum. This is not far from thermite.

However, how much free diatomic iodine is floating around? It also freely bonds with oxygen, thus becoming much less volatile. Additionally, I suspect your fan and shutter parts are alloyed, and probably are designed to resist corrosion the best they can.

Anything exposed to seawater will corrode eventually unless maintained. The internals of your fan motor and shutter are probably of more concern.

IP66 is probably a reasonable selection.

What about the motor case? And the fasteners, axles, chains/geartrain, bellcranks... Is this assembly of your design, or purchased?

The boat I was stationed on had an Al superstructure. We found that high quality powder coating was effective. Good prep work to bare shiny metal is essential. As for the motors, sealed is the way to. I don't know if this is worth the money. You may be better off buying cheap and replacing when they fail. We sailed the Caribbean. After living in PR, I' ve found that if the UV doesn't get it, the salt will.

A coat or two of spray-on epoxy or similiar paint may extend the life of the Louvers.

You need LynDoor™Industries Plasti-Shutter® air flow products.

They love salt spray. We have Seal® motor boxes that can swim with the fishes.

Manufactured from pure, American PVC, the only poly vinyl chloride resin made from ore mined exclusively in the USA.©
