Use of Air Conditioner

09/24/2011 11:57 PM

We manufacture a food Vending machine. The size of the machine is 1200 L X 1000 W X 2200 Height.(All in mm) i.e. 2640 ltrs. The food requires temp of 16*C. This machine has good heat insulation cladding. The loading inside the machine is Stainless Steel Trays weighing 5 kg. The load of the food is also 5 kg.

Can we fit your 1 or 1.5 tonne Capacity window / Split AC directly to the machine and get this required temp. In case, if 16*C is not possible, what minimum temp will be possible and in how much time? The mechanism inside the machine produces negligible heat. Our immediate requirement is of 10 Nos.
In case, if you wish to have more info, feel free to ask.

I don't know where the wires got crossed, but we are not a supplier of refrigeration products.

I would do a Google search: "vending machine refrigeration". Well there, I did it for you.

Capacity wise, 1.5 ton cooling capacity is more than enough to cool the inside of the vending machine. The only possible problem is , the fan coil unit may have a minimum temperature setting that may be higher than temperature you want. If such is the case, you have to modify the minimum setting of the FCU, or bypass or replace it with another one.

We do not know where you will put or use it. In an oven or in bright sunlight in the tropics you might need your tonne.

1 ton of cooling equals 12,000BTU/hour. Kinda depends what's in the box and how well it's insulated. "good heat insulation cladding," is meaningless when calculating cooling load.

What does your competition do?

Is the food already cooled to 16°C when placed into the cabinet (i.e., storage); or does this cabinet need to cool the food from some warmer temperature (i.e, process cooling)?

Greetings,

Not sure what your intended purpose is but 16C is right in the food storage danger zone for microbes and other nasties. Are you sure that's not -16C (freezer temps)??

Might work for red wine or dark beer, though....

A one ton A/C is more than enough to keep things at 16*C (60*F), assuming that your machine is as well insulated as you have stated. There are several other factors which you have omitted, such as the ambient temperature that the machines will be working in, how often they are accessed, and how they are accessed, the temperature, mass and surface area of the product that your are loading into the machine, and how often and how it is replenished. Also, is the machine subject to solar gain from its siting.

It may behoove you to reach for a lower temperature to insure that you get the product cooled more rapidly to your desired temp, in which case, the window unit will have to be tricked into going below its preset cutoff of about 15-17*C. Once you override this, then you have to consider another device to keep it from icing up on you.

There's a fellow that has already taken these factors into consideration in using a window A/C for cooling a walk-in cooler for pennies on the dollar compared to using a commercial unit. His device is called a "Coolbot"

Very simple installation, and his website provides a lot of other useful information for you.

All the food vending machines have heated glass so it doesn't fog up with condensation. You will need to take that into consideration when sizing the refrigeration.
