There's a dip here, but it ain't in the road.

Eyes are used to detect dips in front of cars. You are supposed to look where you are going. Have a clue.

It's going to be a long day.

Would a drunk person really give a flip about a dip?

Lots of new vehicles have this feature built into the rear bumpers already.

Just drive backwards.

Here are some links for you. Sounds like dips, (pot holes), are a big problem in India.

The last one is a document download that I don't need so it's not linked.

You only think you have seen potholes until you have driven there. Poorly designed, poorly built and non-maintained roads are the norm.

From the looks of things, there doesn't seem to much room to maneuver either.

I'd be looking at possibly mounting some sort of ski behind each wheel that would prevent bottoming out.................perhaps mounted on the frame with a heavy spring/shock absorber.

When some spaced out truck driver who is half asleep from trying to drive 20 hours a day to make a marginal living hits one of the bad holes or crosses the line it gets sticky.

In a 300 km drive from Mumbai to Surat I have seen truck after truck off the road wrecked - sometimes upside down with wheels still turning.

We had the 5 window rule - the passengers look out the windows on both sides and the rear window - the front window is for the driver alone. You don't even want to see what is happening up there!

Found this. It's probably a fairly mild scene.

The roadway was in good condition - different.

The lines painted on the road surface are for decoration only.

You can guess what it looks like when things go sour!

How about using a photonic proximity detector; i.e., a pair of eyeballs?

GA - The most obvious as well as the simplest, cheapest and most practical - as long as one keeps them open and doesn't suffer from multiple images caused by an excess of the grape , hops or barley.

Ultrasonic proximity detection for vehicles only works over very short distances, this is why its primary use in vehicles is object detection during parking. To detect potholes or similar dips in the road you would have to be traveling very slowly, and by the time you detect them you wont have enough distance to maneuver around the detected hole.

A more workable option would be to provide better illumination of the road surface with some extra headlights, fog lights or similar directed at a suitable angle on to the road surface for night-time driving.

Stopping distance varies as square of speed. Figure out your stopping distance, and mount a "snout" that long on the front of your car, with an ultrasonic or radar sensor aimed downward, and wired to slam on the brakes. Done deal!

Yo! The longest lance wins...unless it misses. In that case the shorter lance wins...unless it also misses.
