Re: Blocks Made From Sewage Cut CO2

Jon Brigg, a spokesman for Yorkshire Water, said the bricks and blocks were classed as carbon negative because the plants used to make the vegetable oil have absorbed CO2 from the atmosphere.

Is it April Fools day in the UK.

Building a better planet with BS.

They forgot to include all of the vegetable matter contained in the sewage itself.

This could be the greatest carbon offset ever devised!!!!!

Probably not a bad idea(the blocks) but there certainly is a bit of green washing going on.

The 120% to 160% CO2 reduction is most likely a very creative reading of some very questionable facts.

incredibly, they forgot to count the CO2 emissions from incinerating the sewage FGS. to make the "incinerated sludge ash".

They could cut emissions for the "product" by using half the unincinerated sludge to grow the plants, to make the oil, to hold the remainder of the cremated $#it together... if they must.

Good one!!!

Now if they could cut out the middle man and have the bricks go straight from butt to building.

Building construction would become a spectator sport.

I think you have to write the spec on the S**t house wall - providing there is space amongst the other instructions already written there.

Wait a minute, plants consume CO2 during the day and transform it into sugar thanks to photosynthesis, releasing oxigen in the process.

But at night they take oxigen and release CO2, of course the balance favours the oxigen, but even then, given that the vegetable oil comes from plants which do such a wonderful thing for our biosphere, why not leave the plants alone, allow them to keep producing oxigen, instead of squeezing the oil out of them and say this is good.

It is nonsense; it is like saying: " I'll kill a priest and put on his skin to bring some blessings to our community".

They will have to collect the plants only at the end of the day.

Oh for Pete's sake....far better for the environment is to take the sewage, collect the gas and use it to run a gas turbine (used to be done in London), then compress the remaining sludge and either use directly as fertilizer or further digest (more gas) and then use as fertilizer.

The reason the London sewage company stopped with the "natural" gas GT is that they were stopped from dumping the "bricks" at sea...toxic hazard apparently - rather it increased fertility too much and upset the ecosystem.

A better "green" approach would be to do something simiar with the ash from power stations or incinerators...it would save them having to create new hills with the ash! Check out the Drax website, I've seen the ash "hill" and they do a very good job with it. I just think we'll be mining it back out in 30-odd years time...

Which "oil" plants are they using? Palm Oil???! Again, if they'd worked out how to use old engine oil or old cooking oil, I'd be impressed.

I wasn't. It was aimed at the writer of the article and those who gave him/her the information.

Anything else was collatoral damage (or is it friendly fire. I never can tell the difference).

Apologies. Will this cheer you up: I slept 'neath a painting of Sir Nigel Gresley on Monday night. Very good it was (the painting).

GA! You pretty much took the words out of my mouth. The biosolids would be better used as a fertilizer for the monoculture farms that are depleting the minerals in the soils of the world as long as the biosolids are treated to U.S. Class A standards. My local WWTF already does this and sells the Class A solids to whomever wants them. The demand is so high that they can't keep up!
