How Do I Calculate Fuel Consumption in a Gas Turbine?

09/28/2011 1:33 AM

Dears,

if we have power plant capacity 2400 MW. and i will use HFO Fuel , how can i calculte the fuel consumption for this power plant? and is there any different in fuel consumption if we used another fuel ( like crude oil or natural gas )?

One of the ways is to use a dipstick and some arithmetic on the tank contents at two different times.

Another way is to divide the fuel delivered by the delivery interval.

Another way is to talk to the equipment manufacturer.

You forgot one method commonly used - just make a WAG

If you know the heating value of the fuel and the efficiency of the turbine at various percentages of full load...that's the hard way.

If possible, see what the manufacturer says about specific fuel consumption at various load conditions (as PW has already alluded.)

(Rather than calculating, this is more a process of looking it up.)

Ask the fuel truck driver.

In your imagination you can derive 2400MWHr from a cup full of water.

How about installing a fuel flow transmitter, calibrate to what SG fuel your trying to burn. Most gas turbines usually will have a means for monitoring the fuel flow.

BTW, I would also check with engine manufacture before using a HFO, coking wouldn't be pretty on the stator vanes. That could = shell out
