10/02/2011 4:27 AM

I am confused about selection of flow meter for steam apllication between vortex flow meter and orifice with dp transmitter. which is the best?

I'd ask an instrument engineer, they should know.

Oh, never mind.

Could you explain more on the requirement...

Both orifice as well as Vortex flow meters are suitable steam application.

But we could suggest you the best one based on the applications..

Cheers,

Shan

You asked the same question on Jan 8th of this year, here, on this forum.

What specific issues did answers on that thread not address?

That was a really good answer you gave. Interesting that the OP missed it.

Anyway, GA.

Re: Vortex Flow Meter

When selecting steam flowmeter, we need to know whether it is Saturated steam or Super-heated steam. In case of Saturated steam, the density compensation has to be done either by temperature or pressure input. In case of super-heated steam, the density compensation has to be done with both pressure and temperature input. The error due to non-compensation of density is high. Lower the pressure, more would be the error.

The error, due to non-compensation, is more in vortex than in DP based flow measurement (as the error gets square rooted in case of DP). This error is far more than the instrument error-whether it is DP or vortex. Normally, we ignore this point & blame on the instrument.

If the density correction is considered, vortex flowmeter offers advantages like better accuracy and turn-down. The re-calibration requirement in vortex flowmeter is less. However, if re-calibration is required, the entire unit has to be sent to calibration lab. At site, only electronic verfication can be carried out. Points of leakage would be more in DP based measurement compared to vortex flowmeter.

If you can inform on type of steam and operating parameters like pressure, better solution can be suggested.
