Pentium4, prescot, 3.2GH-Overheating

04/23/2007 3:51 PM

For last 3 years I bought 2 Systems with Pentium4, 3.2GH, Prescot, which goes just in start-up to 65 degC. I have discussed it in so many Forums. Found one ref in a vendor's of UK Website with some gentleman's remarks "Too-Hot" with a complaint about Intel not heeding to his complaint.

I have the same problem in Pakistan with my both CPUs & Intel people., not listening to the vendors' complaint.

I think that the Cooler supplied with the CPU is of poor quality [ie Thermal Specs]

as the fan is running @ full speed 3600 to 4800 RPM @ I can feel the speed by the fan's niose.

I have checked & done all the measures to keep it cool by refreshhing Heat-sink compound etc.

Can any one help

Sorry to say this but this is nothing new, Intel knew that theses CPU's ran hot when they put them on the market. These CPU's will run stable though as long as the ambeint temperature remains below 90°F, if the ambient temperature is higher than that then you will need to install an aftermarket cooling block.

Currently cabinets are available that have a sort of snorkel attached to the cover & can be adjusted so that it is just about on top of the cpu. You can add a fan to this to increase the air flow.

There are also special power supplies available that that have a second fan on it to increase forced ventilation within the system.

You could also look for one of those water cooled - but expensive - cooler systems for your system.

How is the system speed and the functionality of peripherals?

In our company's system, I got the same problem, where, I found that the heat sink is not tightly coupled to the thermally conductive point of the processor. I rubbed the processor top and heat sink with sand-paper (rough paper). This removed the remains of previously dried heatsink compound from two surfaces. Then I applied fresh heat sink compound to both surfaces and I tightly tied the heat sink with mother board with waste enamelled copper wire. This gave an extra strength to the thermal contact.

Earlier to this work, My system use to hang when ever its getting hot.

Now Its not hanging.

BUT...The temperature is still 65degrees...

I know this is a kind of Mr.Bean's work.

At last I compromised with it.

Thanks & regards.

I have checked all that you suggested.

For your kind info I am a Electronics Technologist; worked on Power-Electronics for 20 years & well aware of Thermal Management. I have tried all the possible resolutions; eg addition of extra fan; sealing all the ducts & hole leaking the air flow of cooling fans etc etc, but nothing could do a good for the problem.

Thanks for suggestions.

I already have the casing with Snarkel.

I tried to get a better Cooler but not available with Intels, & there is no vendor selling only coolers of variety.

Try checking the flatness of your heatsink. http://www.overclockers.com/tips1224/

Something to consider,

Check the specifications of your power supply and compare that to worst case current usage of the system. To be safe you should have at least a 25% margin above the worst case loading. The typical PC power supplies gets noisy, electricly, when overloaded which will add ripple to the DC outputs, which in turn will generate more heat. We saw a similar problem with a dual Xeon, dual core 3GHz, over heating, we switched to a supply that gave us 30% margin and the problem went a way!

Thanks & regards.

I am using SpeedFan to check all the PSU Voltages, Fanspeed, CPU & internal temperatures:

This a verstyle SW to monitor & control FanSpeed [if CMOS allows]

Assuming that everything with regard to the cooling is clean and not choked with dust and the chip is connected properly/thermally to the cooler, then you have 2 choices:-

1) Get rid of it and buy something better, I personally only use AMD which generally speaking allow a higher temperature but also have very good cooling systems, my AMD 4400 X2 which I am using right now has a chip temp of 49°C and a room temp of 25°C at this time.

2) get a good after market water cooling system.

Thanks & regards.

I will try:

1. To get a better cooler, of pure copper [I don't hope to get one from local market]

or

Fix additional cooling fans in ATX & hope may control temp with additional Niose which I can aviod by Niose-defenders.

2. Get a Branded-Used PC, a cheaper solution to my problem. We Get complete Branded P4 >1.5GB for < $ 150

Intel people here are responding yet to my complaint. I think they have no feed-back system on their web-site. All the Big-bots are KINGs & don't like the public to access them by keeping long corridors of communications; like Roman-Emperrors.

Hope for the best!
