Windows 98 Speaker Problem

04/23/2007 6:08 PM

I have lost the speaker icon from the system tray in the lower right hand corner of my windows screen. As a result, I have no sound and don't know how to get the speaker back. In Control panel, system, it says no speaker is installed. Can anyone help. Windows 98 no longer supported by microsoft.

I am working in Win 98SE. My cntrol panel has Sounds icon but not Sounds and Audio devices. Clicking on the Sound icon does not afford me the opportunity to do anything. It just says no audio device installed. System icon shows drivers and resources allocated for sound and audio devices. Got another idea??

I have just turned the place upside down trying to find my 98 manual needless to say it is hiding some ware very secure. Do you have an intergrated sound card or a plug in card? It could either be driver related or hard ware related. Have a look in device manager to see if it shows any thing. Is this a ready made machine you could try googling the machine type details. then see if any sound related items show up.

I have been running XP for the last 6 years so ninety eight is a bit hazey. If it comes down to the last ditch I will fire up my ancient pentium and explore the matter. I have a very packed schedule at this time I have to go to hospital for the next few days. This body is falling apart.

BrainWave:

1. Get better real soon. If you don't get completely better, at least get better enough to keep us enjoying your input.

2. If you can, take a laptop with you to the hosp. so you can stay in touch.

3. I have a Windows 98 manual. Where can I look in it to find the solution to this prob.?

Call to Microsoft support, it's very easy, and then help you.

Sorry y don't read the last line, Microsoft don't supported?

You have Windows 98SE, if you have the option to reinstall (be careful), do this option, next: do you have PCI card sound, clean the contacts, copy the of manufactured and model, download the software of Internet end reinstall, check in (option – system – hardware): appears the PCI sound card?, if yes go to (star – programs – accessories – entertainment) them check on all boxes, you say (It just says no audio device installed. System icon shows drivers and resources allocated for sound and audio devices) maybe I think you Sound card if broken, jump o replace for a new PCI card, or better buy a new CPU.

Make sure that your speakers have power and test them on another sound source to see that they truly work.

Make sure that your sound card is not having problems, by removing it, clean the contacts and replace it - with power off of course!!

Make sure that the speakers are plugged into the correct socket, older machines were not always color coded!

Read the main board manual and that of the sound card fully through.....

If that does not help, make sure that you have all the relevant CDs or Floppies and de-install your sound/Audio completely, reboot and then re-install......

Install Win98SE completely after saving your data first!!

.....if that don't work, buy a new PC and get WinXP Pro.....not Vista!!!

I agree, this is the easiest way to go.... A driver problem is the most likely cause.

But I would recommend having the driver handy just in case. If it's a separate sound card, the manufacturer's site should have it available. If it's on the motherboard, check for a disk from the computer manufacturer... or motherboard manufacturer if you built the machine yourself.

Re: Windows 98 Speaker Problem

Though I am late but I think *** it is never late if some solution can be found ***

Any how:

Win98Se has Sound for "Sound for Windows actions" eg Open windows, Shut Windows etc etc

It has "Multimedia" Tab. It shows all the Sound & Media devices installed & configured for use.

If no Sound-card & Codec is installed you cannot use any sound in SOUNDs tab

Simple test to check installed device Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> Entertainment -> Open "Sound Recrder" & open media file or try to record your sound if it gives error "No-Sound Device Instlled"

or such NO_Device is installed

or

Configured in Multimedia. Check there in drop-down lists if anything is there. Try to config for Mic, speaker Vedio etc.

If inspite of this action you don't listen, but Mic records, then " Mute" is clicked.

An-Other collegue has already detailed how to access Multimedia.

Hope you may come to some point.
