Over Voltage Damage The Appliances

10/05/2011 8:17 AM

Gentlemen,

Please suggest for the possible overvoltage control for main supply line, the 10 kva power/voltage stablizer doesnot control the voltage, voltage reaches some time 270-280 volts which damage the lights and appliances. The tap changing request failed suggest the remedial and control at user end from over voltage.

OK. Does this mean that the automatic tap changer is faulty? If so, then the remedy is to repair or replace it.

If you meant that you requested a tep changer from the utility, and they said no, then you can look at buying your own power conditioner.

In theory, that "power/voltage stabilizer" should have been the ticket. But some of those are complete scams and do nothing but releive you of some of your money, others are nothing more than capacitors that in this case may have made it WORSE!. You need to be careful and you need to learn to investigate these things before buying them, not just read their literature.

There are still old fashioned power conditioners available, essentially a transformer with a solid state tap switch arrangement, that would serve you better in this case. They are not cheap, but they are probably cheaper than replacing equipment and appliances.

If the over voltage is constant, you might be able to just buy an autotransformer that will "buck" (lower) the voltage permanently. They are less expensive but if you do that, realize that if the utility supply becomes "normal" then you will be low, which is another problem.

Surge arrestors will not take care of constant over voltages, they are for spikes. Different animal. But most power conditioners will have surge protection built-in as well.

Had you registered and indicated what part of the world you are located in, I might have been inclined to post a link for you. But without that little bit of offort on your part, I see no point.
