Monitor Out of Control

10/10/2011 6:31 AM

When I start up my PC the monitor would come on and just after it shows it's loading it would turn blank with an icon bouncing on the monitor with the following letters Hz ? followed by a question mark symbol. How do I get rid of this icon if the mouse arrow is not showing on the monitor?

My educated guess on this is that you have a "refresh rate" set on your PC which the monitor cannot display. This results in a bad situation of not being able to set the rate to something different, because you cannot see the screen to change the settings. You need to try to force the PC into safe mode, by pressing the F8 at the correct time during the loading of the OS. When you succeed in pressing the F8 key at the right time, you should be presented with some options on how to proceed. Choose "Safe Mode", and go from there. Once in Safe Mode, you need to change the Display Settings to something that your monitor can handle. This is a common issue, and a Google search can help you with more specific instructions. If you have another monitor that will work with the current settings of your PC, hook it up, and change the Display Settings in the normal Windows mode, then reconnect the other monitor. This is the easiest solution, but requires a monitor that can work with the current Display Settings that are giving your other monitor problems.

Hope that helps,

Tom D.

A GA! I would add that if you don't know, a good starting choice would be a low resolution such as VGA (640x480) with a refresh rate the same as the power line frequency in your country (60 or 50 Hz). Once you get one resolution/refresh rate combination to work, you can experiment with others, returning to the original if others don't work.
