Removing Chroium Plating From Copper-Based Wires Without Using Acids

10/11/2011 12:32 AM

How can chromium plating be removed from copper-based wires about 0.060" in diameter without using strong acids or bases? Methods based on the use of buffered aqueous solutions are preferred over purely-mechanical methods such as grit-blasting. The close proximetry of the wires to heat-treated austenitic stainless steels make the use of strong acids or strong bases unacceptable, as the stainless steel would undergo intergranular corrosion..

Have you considered electrolysis?

A couple of off the wall ideas, but easy enough to try.

1) Try soaking in coca cola.

2) Try freezing them. If the copper remains pliable, and the chrome becomes brittle, you may be able to just flex the wire and shatter the chrome on the outside, allowing it to fall off.

Melting point of copper 1083C
Melting point of Chromium 1613C
Heat it to 1300 ...

I was thinking that he still wanted wire when he was done.

I'm grown and I still enjoy a piece of kitten every once in a while.

Yes, this looks like a good place to strip the chrome.

In the metals business they call this chrome stripping.

Look through these link and see if they have a stripper to remove chrome from a base layer of copper.

Cyanide based chrome stripping

chrome stripping organic

Why do you want to? The bare copper will then be prone to oxidation?

Try de-plating ( Revere the polarity)
