Forming Stainless in draw die

10/13/2011 11:38 AM

Has anyone out there had any experiences with drawing of 304L stainless steel.

Material is .250" thick. Approx. 4" circular blank. Needs to be drawn/stamped to make 1.9" dia. x 2" long cup shape while maintaining a bottom thickness of .2" .. Any experiences are welcome and appreciated.

Have you drawn some parts and are having troubles? If yes, what does your circle grid analysis show you? How bad are the wrinkles?

Deep drawing .250" 304L will take several stages, as well as a hefty press. Heating the blanks? How about the die/punch? There will probably be a tendency for the material to migrate from the bottom unless carefully staged. This will show up in your CGA, as well it will be measurable.

Have you considered spin forming?
