Electronic/Electrical Mechanical Engineer Magazine

10/18/2011 3:24 AM

Hi One & All,

My son wants to be an electronic/electrical mechanical engineer and would like to get him a magazine that would cover this field. The only thing I come up with is a magazine called "SERVO". He is a AE Chief in the navy and has ASS Electronic degree.

Thank you for your help.

BEN

There are plenty of trade magazines like The Engineer and Eureka etc, if you are in the business these are free, they may well be free online too, I dunno 'cos they just turn up on my desk every month.
He may well qualify for a free copy (if only I knew what AE stood) they are keen to dole out free subscripions as it keeps their circulation up which looks good to the advertisers.

Hello Ben, Servo is a good mag for the hobbyist/student for learning robotics, microcomputers and other stuff. Also there usually info on the robotic industry in general topics. There ads for self-training of microprogram electronics/robotic controls etc.

Has your son checked to see if the Navy has any training in microcomputers/robotics or something similar?

Also is your son wanting to electronic/electrical mechanical engineer after the tour of duty? There a number of trade schools and collage course through out the country that he can get the training. I think servo magazine has the ads for them. If he is wanting to jump start he could look into accredited online/mail self pace courses. BUT I would make sure the credits transfers to where he would finish though.

Industrial automated/robotics can be a good field to get into from design to repair/maintenance.

Also there are trade magazines in automated/robotics. Some are "free" with qualifications, others are not.

Here one from control engineering magazine.

Also you can look here for other magazines that may be of interested.

hope this helps.

Charles

I like Machine Design magazine:

Lots of interesting stuff, and it's free.

I'm guessing that your son is in the US Navy?

Can't say I know to much about the career structure and career development for the US Navy, but I'm going to take a stab here and say if they are anything like the British Navy ( and there are loads of similarities) I would say they have a careers development program or programs already.

I suggest your son, who has proved he's smart to the Navy, speaks to his CO and enquire about further education etc.

Why leave the Navy when they will pay him a salary, pay for his further education and then give him promotion with a further pay rise when qualified.

In addition, and we have had the discussion here before, there is nothing worse than being qualified with no experience. Once qualified, the Navy will want their "pound of flesh" and make him work for the investment they have just made, and he gets the experience.

So when he does leave the Navy, he has the qualifications, he has the discipline AND above all, he has the experience

He may be eligible (by MOS) for the Navy C-7 training course. If he is a Chief, he must have heard about it.

A few magazines I look at now and then are Circuit Cellar, Nuts & Volts, Elektor, EPE, and Servo. As somone else stated, they are hobbyist oriented, but a few articles have some real jewels of information.

Although it is not a regular magazine, something that makes fabulous reading is:

You need LynDoor™Press' latest release, "101 Ways to Make Grease from Palm Colonel Oil".
