Don't Die Needlessly

10/19/2011 12:41 PM

I had a friend die over the weekend of an apparent heart attack. He was found by his cleaning lady yesterday morning. He had been complaining of a sore right shoulder when I saw him on Saturday. Said it felt like a pulled muscle.

We've all probably heard the warning signs of heart attack or stroke. Most of us probably also assume that it won't happen to us.

A little reminder doesn't hurt, so I'm posting the warning signs that we should all keep in the back of our heads. For our overseas friends, the Mayo clinic in the US is a very reputable source for medical information.

No need to fill up the thread with sympathy wishes. I know your guys' thoughts are with me, and I appreciate it.

Better safe than sorry.

Good information, Kram, and I am sorry for your loss.

I have a family member in the hospital right now after complaining of the exact same thing: sore right shoulder. He had had a mild heart attack.

Thanks for putting this info front and center.

Generally, it is the left side or arm that people experience reference pain or numbness, so the right side is somewhat unusual and may not have given even a doctor cause to look further. But we can only speculate.

Thanks for the links and the reminder that life is precious and worth preserving. Someone just might love you.

I had a good friend pass from a that 2 weeks ago. He had a sudden attack in his living room and a widow maker in the ambulance. Can't even take his number out of my phone yet.

Good links, hopefully they help someone stay a little longer.

Thanks for the info, kramarat

Trying not to be a public health message.

But you brought some things to light where there are other health issues not to ignore either, no matter what age you are. There are a number of health issues to consider also other than heart attack such as stroke warning signs also have to be addressed:

Stay healthy,

Sorry about you friend.

A heart attack effects each of us different is some of the problem.

With in the last year a friend of mine whom already had a stent put in, thought he had a cold when he had his. Couldn't get warm and felt run down.

With in the last few months my brother-in-law just felt sick to his stomach.

My father a few years back thought he had indigestion.

Also note that if you have had a nuclear stress test do not blow the signs off. Both my father and brother-in-law had one with in 12 month prior to their heart attacks. And at the time my father had his which was minor. During his check up he had almost completed the the nuclear stress test when they found problems.

Both ended up having multiple bypasses.

It briefly crossed my mind on Saturday that it might be a warning sign, but I too thought that it was associated with the left side.

Not that it would have made a difference. He wouldn't have listened...................he was hard headed too.

Thanks guys.

Too bad they pulled it from the front page so fast. It would be interesting to hear about other strange ways that heart attacks have presented themselves.

I agree, I was watching close.

Back in 1992, I knew of 3 people of which 2, I knew personally, the two appeared to be in good health and active. Expired in a 30 day span. The oldest was 42-45 years of age. The the 3 third was a bank teller, left the air conditioned bank 68-70 degrees and walk out in the heat. Around 100. dropped within 10 steps from the door.

I was 32 years old at the time and was thinking, " 45 years old....what the.... "

You just never know when your time is gonna come. My friend beat the odds. He was 75, still could drink with the best of them, and smoked about a pack and a half a day.

Then you get guys that are young and healthy and drop dead, like the firefighter that was running the marathon last week.

I have a retired nuclear physicist friend who says that the best way to die is to be shot by a jealous husband. I guess you could call that "going out with two bangs"!

I don't know about that one. Jealous husbands probably don't aim that well. With my luck, I'd just get maimed or paralyzed.

Seeing a doctor may give you more time to piss off more husbands sounds more fun to me.

Re: Don't Die Needlessly

Now I'm faced with another dilemma. I'm over my personal pity party for the most part. He would just get mad if he knew I was moping around mourning my loss.

Tonight is the viewing. Both of us hated this tradition, and I know for a fact that he didn't want his body laid out for display. He was a fairly private person. Of course, as far as I know, he didn't put this down in writing anywhere, I'm completely out of the loop, and his boys are in charge of the arrangements.

My wife says we have to go pay our respects, including bringing our 4 year old daughter. I've got nothing but good memories, and feel absolutely no need to go look at him..............especially knowing how he felt.

Anyway, this is sounding like a Dear Abby letter. I think I'm going to skip it.

The point is, that in addition to keeping aware of heart attack symptoms, etc. We all need to make sure that we write down our wishes. It's something I haven't done yet. Been putting it off for years.

OK, putting it in writing: I wish to be propped up in a corner of the cr4wlspace. Which is kind of where I am all of the time, anyway.

Skip it, and have a drink in his memory.

If you knew his family, donate some money to a charity they would like.

Otherwise, just remember the good times you had solving the world's problems together.

I went back to Arkansas last month for a memorial service for a younger cousin who died of cancer. She worked for Oral Roberts and his son. The whole fam damily is deeply religious.

I dreaded the whole affair, but, like you, I went. Well, we both got through it and I imagine that your friend's family was glad to see you there, as were my relatives.

They might not have noticed if you hadn't gone. But I'll bet that they remember the fact that you were there.

Cheers.

Sometimes you gotta do, what you gotta do. I'm glad I went.

Now I'm off to Home Depot. I've pretty much used up this excuse for not getting any work done in the kitchen.
