Lions and Elephants in Oklahoma?

08/17/2005 2:00 PM

No, we're not talking about the Oklahoma City Zoo.

A group of ecologists have a plan to transplant African fauna to the American Great Plains. Supporters say it could help save some species from extinction in Africa, where protection is spotty and habitats are vanishing. They say the relocated animals could also restore the biodiversity in North America to a condition closer to what it was before humans overran the landscape more than 10,000 years ago.

The ecologists realize there are some significant hurdles, though. Says Cornell University ecologist Josh Donlan, the lead author of the proposal, "We are not saying this is going to be easy...Lions eat people."

Oryx

08/17/2005 2:34 PM

The argument about "biodiversity" is tenuous at best. Between 1969 and 1977, 93 oryx were released at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. Today, there are approximately 3000 animals. Now the National Park Service is forced to remove wandering oryx from the White Sands National Monument in order to preserve native plants and animals. For those who've never been to the Monument, check out these pictures of White Sands. (There are lots of others on the Web, too.) White Sands is an amazing place - and worth preserving.

Biodiversity Run Amok

08/19/2005 8:18 AM

Note the key phrase "... could also restore ...". Lots of things "could" happen. Since no one really knows what the ecological condition of the North American continent was 10,000 years ago, it is just someones guess. And if the guess is wrong, who would know?

Making major policy decisions based soley on what "could be" is never a good idea.
