Help with Ducting for Fire Chief

10/26/2011 7:14 PM

We are installing a Fire Chief 1100 in the basement of a 1800s old farm house. There is no ducting so we will need to run duct work. Does it have to be sized? I have been reading about ducting and I am very confused. Are we over thinking this? Pleum is 12" then main truck was going with 12' x 18" then branching off.

Why not go their web site. Here's what they say. Since we don't know the length and config. of anything, good luck.

"DUCT RUNS: Duct wori( Shouid be desi9n.ed so the e~ter-nal stat ic pressure on high speed does not exceed .02 water column Inches while developing IIIr veloci t ies Of 600 feet to 1,000 feet per minute In the main t runk duct lind 400 feet to 600 feet per minute at the registers. The heat out let erea should never be less than 12 Inches round. The Fi re Chief MUST be instal led wi th a coid ai r return system. The system sl"lotJid be a minimum of 10% larger than the heat out let to read i ly t ransfer the ( ( l id ai r beck to the furnace. Avoid using 90- elbows In duct IVns; 45- elbows provide a bet ter ai r f low and len resistance. CAUTION : The warm ai r supply out let of the supplementary himace should not be connecte<! to the cold IIlr return Inlet of the cent ral hi rnace, because a possibi l i ty exists of components of the cent rel furnace overheat ing and causing the a!nt l1l l furnaa! to oper -ate other than as Intended."

No, lyn's computers copy and paste feature appears be lazy (unlike mine).

As for the original question, the manual linked to the suppliers website clearly spells out what needs to be done, so read the manual. Also note the clear warnings on the company website.

THIS IS NOT A DIY PROJECT! You'll need a professional chimney technician to do the installation

Don't try this yourself without the proper professional help or you may get a visit from a real fire chief. If you have hired professional help, kindly guide the manual into the installers hands (perhaps with a side trip to the back of his/her head).

No, I must be lazy. I just copied the "DUCT WORK" section of the first site.

After that, I lost interest quickly. Figured OP could take it from there.

Having looked at the web site, I'm going with Jack on this, get an approved contractor.

Take in to account your house insurance.

Incorrectly installed you could find yourself without cover in more ways than one.

Before you get too far, you may want to look into these.
