Screen Saver in XP

10/27/2011 10:31 PM

I'm pretty good with WinXP, but I'm a bit confused on something.

All the computers we are providing our Customers have XP and my install instructions tell me to change the time for screen saver to 120min. I find that any user I log into (admin to Cust) will not allow me to change the screen saver time from 15 min to anything. Once I close the window and go back in to see it is always back to 15min.

Perhaps this is due to the software build my company applies, but I would think I should be able to change it with and admin level access.......

Do I need some back door??

When you open the screen saver tab, is the box checked next to, "On Resume, Password Protect? If it is, you may have to find out what the Administrator's Password is. Another than that, I'm sure you know to select "Apply" before selecting "OK"

Just out of curiosity..............why are you still using screen savers? For quite some time now, computers just go into sleep mode.

We connect the computer to our anlalyzing equipment and a slepp mode would interrupt communication between the two. (more below)

The software your company provides might have added a registry key in HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Control Panel\Desktop... that's where you can set some restrictions.

You can also take a look at the key HKCU\Control Panel\Desktop which has the value for ScreenSaveTimeout in seconds.

Hi One & All,

WARNING Never, ever make changes or even looking at the "Registry Files" with out making a back up of the "Registry Files". If you damage the "Registry Files" with out a backup file, you will PAY HELL! getting your computer back up and running correctly with out reloading you OS!!!!

***********************************************************

If the following method works, it is far more safer way.

I had problems once and while some XP computers with Administrator's permissions . To get around this use the follows processor:

1. Do a cold BOOT UP/START UP

2. Start right a way pressing function key "F8" until you hear a "Beep"

3. Select "Safe Mode"

You will know that you are in "Safe Mode" because it will say so in each "Connors" plus a warning that you have limit functions.

Then you can go to "CONTROL PANEL", "DISPLAY" SCREEN SAVER" and set the time.

Then shut down and reboot.

Check to see if the new time was sent.

Please let us know if this works for you.

BEN

Must be the way our systems are set up - I could NOT get into safe mode by holding F8 on boot up (maybe I need to push harder? Or 2 fingers on F4??? ;-)

I just kinda said the heck with it and selected NONE for screen saver, and it stayed selected (even after re-boot)!?

This will probalby be the BEST since we never want to loose the link between the computer and our equipment. Our product manager for that instrument just was promoted (?) so I will bring this up to the powers that be.

Thanks to all for your assistance!! ss
