Extending a 24 Conductor Camera Module Ribbon

10/29/2011 4:32 PM

I was going to get one of those 808 keychain cameras. I wanted to extend the ribbon cable so that I could create a button camera. What is the best type of wire to use for this and what is the maximum length that this would work at? I have lots of very thin enamel coated magnet wire which is about twice as thick as human hair. Would this enamel wire work if I were to bundle it together and put it inside a rubber tube? The pitch spacing of the contacts is 0.625mm.

It probably would work, but I wouldn't say for how long or how well it would work. I'm fairly certain you can get your power signals through those thin wires. I'm not sure you will get your data signals reliably back from the camera with these wires without doing something to make the signal wires a fixed impedance. At the same time, what have you got to lose. Its not like your trying to secretly record a conversation with a drug dealer. That will be a little foolish.

I have got slightly thicker wire that would probably work. It is purple and I have a reel of it. Does anyone know how to solder these wires onto a ribbon cable without breaking the contacts off? I hear that they are extremely fragile and heat sensitive.

If your purple wire is lacquered copper, you may be able to get rid of the lacquer & tin the copper (so soldering will be easier) by dipping the ends in a solder bath (with a bit of flux).

Alternatively, scrape carefully with a razorblade, then tin with a soldering iron & multicore fluxed solder.

(Be easier with lead solder, but c'est la vie).

The contacts are already exposed. I was wondering what the best way to solder them is. I have heard of conductive glue that can be used for surface mount devices.

There are electrically conductive adhesives, but most require heat to cure. I'm not up on this technology, but check it out.

They don't provide the signal quality or current carrying capacity of solder, but they might just work for you.

This is just for fun right? Try anything. Give it a go. What have you got to loose?

To minimise coupling and interference I was going to bunch the wires together in groups of 6 so that I would have 4 bundles which could then be wrapped together. The only thing that worries me is the ribbon cable as it is soldered directly to the board.

Here are images of the camera and camera module from the chucklohr website.

I have now got the camera, but there seems to be a thin layer of epoxy covering the camera module contacts. Is there a safe way to remove this?

Can you post a pic?

My thought (unseen) is very careful application of very fine grit wet'n'dry - rouge paper if you've got the patience (may take hours ).

Here is a picture of the one that I have. The camera module seems to be glued to the board with a small amount of epoxy. Is there any good way to get the module off? Another problem is that the processor and clock crystals are right next to the module. The clock speed of the camera is over 27 megahertz.
