hydraulics hose covers

04/25/2007 9:10 PM

I work for one of the largest railroads in the country. We are looking for a hydraulic hose, that has a shield or cover over the first 4 to 5 feet of the hose. The concern we have is fluid injection. Some of the tools we use,the hose hangs next to the employees body.Do they make a hose like this???

why not use braided hose...not too sure for what you use the hose and equipment...

best

Hi railroader. what is the working pressure of the tools that you are using as a wire braid hose or multi spiral wire hose is good for up to 6500psi and with a 4 to1 safety factor the burst pressure is around 26000 psi . some specialty hoses like jackline hoses eg enerpac hoses are rated at 10000psi working pressure and 40000 burst pressure. as long as the hoses are not damaged and changed as part as a maintenance schedule you should have no dramas with fluid injection .

But, if you ask the hose suppliers, what is the allowable twist on the hose, they will say "none". ie for many applications, the hose is working outside its specification even at lower pressures. If people are working near the hose ends, the ends should be tethered, and many experienced companies insist that a flexible hose is pushed over the hose end to contain any jets of fluid. Clear pipe is usually used.

assuming no hose twist is present.a clear tube will not stop a jet of oil at even 1500 psi from blowing a hole in the clear tube if it has just punctured a multi spiral hose rated at 6500psi working pressure

The clear pvc cover idea is sound provided it is a relatively loose cover. When the hose bursts the fluid under pressure, being virtually incompressible, will dissipate inside the outer cover and not through it.

We use poly hoses to 20,000 psi with N2 gas. Of course the outer layer of the hose is pricked to allow trapped gas to escape but the clear cover is not damaged.

Many hose suppliers such as Gates Aeroquip and Parker will supply a protective layae on the outside of the hose, but it is intended for abrasion protection.

Regarding your hose querry,

I will assume it is for MOW-Maintenance of way equipment,

using a 4-6 braid hose and fitings for such high pressures is the norm and actually what is needed for high pressure applications and duty cycles, what is done is to use abrasion resistant sleeeve covers for the fulll length of the hose assembly from the nipple end of one hydraulic fitting socket to the other hydraulic fitting sockets nipple end and it is held in place by exterior grade black electrical cable tie wraps and spring tensioned whip stops used for high pressure air hose to safely hold air hose in the event of a quick connect fitting coming loose from a jack hammer etc.

If you could be more specific about the application-what is it for?

A brush mower grinder, bed undercutter, ditcher, spike puller, ballast tamper, ballast side dumper, Difco air powered side dumper, spike nailer, tie layer-setter, complete tie train, rail tie crane etc.

The big problem is convincing people to change hosing when it is time to do so-

If the hose carcass is brittle, baked from heat of the oil on the exterior sheathing it is time to change it as all the layers are brittle and will fail due tot he heat and pressure.

hose sweeps need to be gradual an dnot tight due to the hydraulic hoses limited flexibility under pressure- just because it is on a reeel when youu pay it out form the reel stand at the hose machine does not, I repeat mean that it will bend that much under pressure or survice for that long.

Hydraulic oil puncture injuries are the worst kind and massive damage will be inflicted to the injured person from the oil punture and burning of flesh-if the hose is brittle it is time to get rid of it as the wire in the hose is fully capabale of failing and flexing enough to allow for a pin prick escape of hot hydraulic oil- remember hydraulic oil under pressure is just like water or electricity it is lazy and will seek any and all points of escape simply it is under pressure- in elelctricity case it want to find a ground-just like a traction motors love for standing water in a railroad bed.

please contact me off the board if you want help with your inquiry. lzaharis@lightlink.com

We use this hose on hand and surface grinders, hand tamping tools, spikers, rail expanders,etc.. the operating pressure is 2000 psi.I appreciate you taking the time to reply to this inquiry.

Hi, my name is Kevin, check out this link http://www.hoseprotextiles.com/ Our company manufactures high pressure hose protection. If you think this might be a good application for what you doing, just give us a phone call. Ask for Kevin or David.

MAZZER INDUSTRIES PRODUCES A NYLON SLEEVE THAT HAS PRESSURE CONTAINMENT CAPABILITIES. I WOULD ALSO RECOMMEND THE USE OF A TOUGH COVER HOSE LIKE PARKER 471TC OR 471ST. PARKER ALSO PRODUCES PRESSURE CONTAINMENT SLEEVING THROUGH ITS POLYFLEX DIVISION.
