Plastic sorting technology

04/26/2007 1:52 AM

We have a plastic reprocessing unit.

We wish to know the method by which different varieties of plastics like PP. HDPE, LDPE are sorted out manually from a mixed pile of injection-molded and blow-molded scraps/wastes.

...sorted out manually...

Is this the answer?

Have you searched other cr4 threads ? There's a lot of info , and some fairly complex processes used. I'm a bit puzzled you have a processing plant , but don't appear to have a sort method ? What are you doing currently.

I have recently tried this wierd experiment. Put in all those junk plastic in to a water tub, which can be driven by motor. Basically a centrifuge. Now the interesting thing comes out. Rotate at a speed where there is swirl created. Now lift up the entire water base by means of disc from bottom ( look at reducing the volume of water ). This will through out the plastic of same density. Collect them by mean of Choot conveyor. And repeat the exercise untill last piece is out.... This is a kinna experiment I did at home. So you can imagine the set up I did......don't ask me. I had to get the shouting both from my Mom and wife.....

Carrying forward if someone can afford to do this experiment at well equipped lab and refine it. it might help with already present plastic junk around.......obviously I am unemployed youth at any plastic firm....

Hi Mr Idiotalways , I had some disastrous kitchen sink experiments with density . They lacked finesse. You really need to incorporate a colour detection method and some rapid firing air-blasters.

Here in the USA, most recyclable plastic products come with the triangular recycling symbol and a number telling which class of material they're made of; at least some actually have the material itself listed adjacent the symbol. It is my understanding that all items with the same number can be placed together for re-use, though typically, they are further sorted by color if that's appropriate to the end use or to the waste stream being sorted.

UK plastic generally has the same US triangle system . My research tells me that this is for identification (as opposed to meaning recyclable). However I also find that all plastic can be re-cycled , which is a bit confusing. My local waste collectors will only accept a limited range of type , and they employ hand sorters to sift for types that shouldn't be there (based on training to visually ID which container shape is used by which plastic - sounds a bit dodgy to me ). Colour is important in the same way it is for recycled glass - a lot of people leave the top on to keep a used plastic bottle flat , which must cause problems.

Try finding a site that explains plastic characterization methods. For example, polyolefins (PE, PP) will float in water. PVC will autoextinguish when lighted with a match. HIPS will burn and smell like carbon, and so on... There are several sites with this simple methods for plastic identification.

Good luck.

There are automatic sorters available on the market which classify pastics based on the Near Infrared Spectrum which is reflected by the plastics parts. These technology is mainly used for bottle sorting for example to sort PET bottles from HDPE bottles. If you want to learn more about that systems we invite you to visit our website at www.se-so-tec.com
