Heating Ventilating and Air - Conditining for 2*2 MW Hydropower

11/07/2011 11:34 PM

Hi, does 2*2 MW hydropower plant needs heating, ventilating and air conditioning?

Regards,

sks

A reasonable comfort target might be 20°C (68°F) in winter, and 25°C (77°F) in summer. Since the local temperatures exceed this range by 10°C (18°F) to either side, some wintertime heating and summertime cooling would make sense.

Does a Sherpa give a rip about how cold it gets? Does a yeti shift on a glacier?

Do you have or want to spend the money?

Ventilating? If you are going to create a void then I wouldn't plan on putting workers in there.

If you are going to put workers in there then health and comfort may come into consideration. If you don't have federal or local regulations (disabilities act) that require heating and cooling for workers then you can run it like a sweat shop if you want (it's cheaper).

If you have a labor union or organization of any type then they may be able to tell you what the employees want.

Should not that be calculated based on local conditions?

A generator may produce plenty of heat for all seasons. Its heat may not be too much in summer. But it, and the switching gear may be rosting and corroding at over 65% relative humidity. Do you want that, or can even allow that?

Such are the questions for the proiects general health. when some consideration remains for the worker, it is good. Content worker produce better results.

Heat and ventilation are both critical equipment for a hydroelectric generating station.

When the plant is not operating you will need heat to keep the environment within the design temperature range for the equipment and to prevent condensation from forming inside the generators, switchgear, oil systems, etc.

When the plant is operating the generators will put out a lot of heat which must be removed to prevent overheating them and everything else in the plant. The generator manufacturer should be able to provide information as to how much heat will be produced by the generators. At our small (2*1 MW) hydro facility the roof top ventilators must change the building air 8 times an hour to prevent heat buildup inside the concrete structure.

I would not recommend air conditioning except in office/shop areas. You'd need a massive unit to handle the heat from the generators, which would be very expensive for the small incremental improvement above simple forced air.
