Compact Voice Adequate Speaker

11/08/2011 2:34 AM

I'm doing some preliminary engineering for a small home electronics gadget / divice and I need to get some idea about how big the speaker will be. i'm hoping to use something less than 1" diameter and 1/8" thick. The sound that will be generated needs to be adequate to play discernble music as well as a recorded voice. Can someone point me in the right direction?

Sound decays as the square of distance. So, if the device will be held at the ear, a small transducer will work. If you want to hear it from across the room, you'll need something else.

More detail will give you good answer, instead of a guess.

Another source would be haedphone transducers.

Do you have any idea what frequency response you want? dB (power) output you want?

Human hearing is GENERALLY from 10-20 Hz to 15,000Hz.

Thanks for the reply. The device is basically somehting that you would attach to your fridge and it just needs to generate voice that you can hear from say 4 feet away. no idea on F/R it just needs to replicate a human voice.

Any small transducer will do...for a temporary setup anywhere you can affix it to anything which will amplify the sound, i.e., solo cups, pringles can, thin sheet steel, etc.

I once bolted a small speaker to the bottom of a 5 gallon plastic bucket. Made a great outside speaker.

Be sure to keep front of speaker separate from back to generate quality sound waves.

Done by attaching speaker to an enclosure in this instance.

There are loads of consumer electronic devices that have these in them. Go to an appliance retailer and see what is making the sort of sound you want in the size you desire and reverse engineer from there.

I am pointing you at extant solutions.

I've used portable speakers for MP3 players in similar projects. They have reasonably good sound quality and are very inexpensive ($1US/pair). They usually come with a battery powered internal amplifier. If you don't need the amp, just pull out the speakers and use them in your device.
