CT's VA Burden & Rating

11/18/2011 4:47 AM

Can anyone explain about VA Burden and Rating of CT?

Can i use the VA Burden of 7.5 instead of 15? For example, Similarly can we use "600/1A-3 Core CT" instead of "1250/1/1A-3 Core CT"...? and use of "Core:CL:5P10,15VA" instead of "Core:CL:5P10,20VA"...

Regards,

Anguraj

i) The rated burden of a CT secondary winding shall be as close to but not less than the total burden connected to that secondary winding. And, do not forget to include the CT secondary winding's burden, the burden of the connecting leads from the CT to the loads (relays or meters) and the load burden. So, if the actual connected burden (as calculated above) of this CT secondary is less than or equal to 7.5 VA, you may very well opt for a 7.5 VA CT, instead of a 15 VA CT. ii) A strict NO-NO. Definitely one cannot and must not use a 630A CT in place of a 1250A CT. iii) As in (i) above.
