I think what he means is the factors that you consider into the general equation;

E=PxHrs

where E is energy in kWh

P is power output of the generator in kW

Hrs is no of hours in a year the plant(generator) operates

The most important consideration for Hydropower is the quantity of water versus time (river flow) and the height of the water column (head).

Energy output = energy input.

Useful energy output = energy input - losses.
