When a bus bar manufacturer gives the current rating for different bus bar cross sections, he assumes a certain standard conditions of installation & operatio, like ambient temperature, open bus bars, skin effect & proximity effect. But, during the actual installation and/or operation of the bus bar, following the standard conditions may not be possible. You arrive at a compromise by de-rating the bus bar to achive the most cost-effective sizing.
