Spiral Welded Fire Water Service Pipe Limitation?

11/23/2011 8:58 PM

Are there any limitations on using spiral welded pipes in underground fire water service? The line size is 10" and we use raw water as fire water.

Thanks for reply. Carbon Steel is the material A53 Gr B.

Is there any code restriction on using it.

I have not seen CS line used in underground fire water service. The more common materials are HDPE or cement lined ductile iron. Corrosion will be a huge issue for a CS underground pipe.

As for the code, have a look in NFPA 24?, or your local codes.

Since it is a flow line and with low pressure, you can use it for your fire water service.

Make sure that, there are no leaks in the weld joints.

We have used it for Tower water low pressure in the steel mills the outside is coated the medium is chemically treated as not to corrode the CS. Not sure why it would not work for a fire water service as long as its coated outside, there may be issues, as stated, with inside corrosion depending on the nature of the raw water used.

for us economy is a big issue so we will wrap a tape coating on this pipe. I want to know if there is a limitation or restriction by any code or regulatory authority

Economy along with labor I presume? Manually wrapping the pipe is labor intensive you can buy spiral pre-coated pipe.

In our refinery the pipeline of fire water system of the storage tanks have been replaced HDPE pipe (underground) and carbon steel (aboveground). When you use raw water as fire water, you need to coat the carbon steel pipe both inside and outside. If you use 'dry pipe' (pipeline which is temporarily filled) maybe you don't need any inside coating.

Can you make it the supplier's responsibility to provide code compliance citations for your application?
